MEN WHO KNOW
TOO MUCH ̈· Why Nazis Expel Journalists
VARIOUS MEANS OF PRESSURE
! $
انه
The Nazi regime has devoted more energy and care to "selling itself" to the outer world than any other. In a highly organised and disciplined country, whose popula tion is both cleanly and in ordinary circumstances kindly, it is easy to present a persuasively agreeable facade to the casual tourist,
The principal danger to the Nazi Propaganda Ministry is, therefore, the foreign correspondent who knows his job and knows Germany. so that he cannot be easily, bam- boozled. Soon after Herr Hitler came to power the Nazi authorities began to thin the ranks of foreign Journalists in Berlin, either by ex- paladon or by carefully applied pressure.
Newcomers who took their places were naturally at a disadvantage until they had gained experience, which took some time. Each ex- palton was therefore, a gain to the Nazi regime. Altogether by this summer 15 members of the Foreign Press Association of Berlin had been expelled, while as many others had been manoeuvred out of the country.
As an example of the latter method the case of an American Journalist may be quoted, who, in the early days of the Nazi regime was told that the authorities would hot "delga" to expel him, but that they would break off all official re- lations with him. Meanwhile the
assistant German-Jewish arrested.
was
The American left to secure his assistant's release. His only fault had been to have run to earth some anti-Semitic bestialities for which he could only produce evidence at the risk of other Jewish lives.
LISTENING IN
All Correspondents soon became accustomed to the awareness that when telephoning to London they were being listened-in to by the Gestapo. Technique rapidly pro- gressed, and human listeners were soon replaced by dictaphones at tached to the telephones.
All foreign correspondent were well aware that in telephoning inside Germany itself from their can telephones they had to take the greatest care not to cast any suspicion upon German acquain-
tances as possible sources of in- formation, which was disagreeable to the authorities.

In the first months of the Nazi regime "the German authorities were cautious in handling British Journalists, but before half year
was up an English journalist was arrested in Munich and expelled,
that he referred to secret instruc- tions to the German Press in one of his messages.
The present writer well recollects how General Goering collected the foreign Press representatives short- ly after the Reichstag fire trial and assured them that all their tele-: phone conversations as well as their telegrams and letters were avait- able to him, and that if the foreign correspondents failed to appreciate the great and glorious historical moments which they were privileg- ed to be experiencing, the Nazi äu- thorities would have to consider what steps were to be taken.
Expulsions or "pressure" against correspondents from smaller and weaker States such as are most of Germany's neighbours were fre- quent.

Major C. 8. Javis, Governor of Sinal for 14 years and known to Goodyear every Arab in the Middle East as Jarvis Bey, recently explained his theory of the Bible story of the night of the Israelites from Egypt. He was addressing the Ethnic Study Group in London.
The way in which the, "sea” was;
dry when the mentes aosted and flooded when the Egyptians attempted the crossing was no
miracle, he declared.
"The pillar of fire described in Exodus would probably be caused by one of the squalla which still occur in Sinal and cause a column of cloud from which lightning flas hes at night. A narrow strip of sand separates the Mediterranean from Lake Pardawil, a vast lagoon. and my theory is that the Israeli- tea marched along this strip.
