So far the bombardment of matter by fast particles had proved the most effective method for studying the transformation of the elements, but in the case, of the heavier elements slow neutrons were extraordinarily efficient trans- tormers. During the last few years progress in knowledge of formation, had been very rapid. and almost all elements had been shown to be capable of transforma- tion by suitable agencies. There was good evidence that an isotope of gold could be formed by bom bardment of platinum with fast centrons, but it was uncertain which of the isotopes of platinum was involved. In the course of this work more than Afty new radioactive substances had been observed. These represented un- stable isotopes of the elements which may have existed th the sun. but disappeared as soon as the earth cooled down. Sufficient knowledge has accumulated to in- dicate that a great variety of transformations were possible with the fast projectiles available.
