What's in a kiss?

Ah, Who can tell?

Maybe it's Heaven,

Maybe it's,

Quite incandescent, . or freezingly cold, Almost too cautious, or rather too bold;

Fugitive pleasures,

Treat them as such

Meaning so little

Or meaning so much,

Just mistletoe-kisses! Till you forget,

Link them with laughter, but not with regret.

Sometimes it's careless,

Sometimes it's gay;

Hong Kong A More Pleasant City Than Shanghai.

My first impression of Hong Kong, as contrasted to Shang- hai, was of an abiding ‘sunday afternoon' quality. (This only by comparison). I have since discovered that Hong Kong too, has its form of bedlami. But even now, as I regard the Hong Kong scene. I am still impressed with its order. I find that I consider”... the law, as expressed through the dignified magistrates of Hong Kong, somewhat severe. I sm'sorry for the empoverished, coo- lies who artifully contrive to serap a paltry amount of gold leaf from a sign board, get caught, and are docked three months of their freedom for that anali sin, and etc. I am sorry when I dis- cover that a white inhabitant receives more consideration in the dealing out of Justice than the native coolle. Other things too, impress me negatively. However, on the whole, there are many generous folk here, people with whom it is a pleasure to work and who understand the highlights of a friendly attitude.

The picture at the top of these impressions is of two inhabi- tants of Shanghai Immediately upon seeing the drawing, you will observe the contrast to the people (Chinese) who Hve and work in Hong Kong. The ever present element of stoicisan, as discovered in the Chinese temperament is evident in this draw-- ing.

It strikes me that, the Empire-preserving Colonial resident could take many a feather, from the hat of Chinese humour and understanding. As indeed, could the remainder of the world,
