this left an enormous area of the previously dumped refuse which was still capable of breeding iss and the experiment has been dropped. It is hoped that next year sludge from the dredging of the Harbour will be available for spreading over the surface of the dump. In the meantime the fur- ther experiment of lighting slow- burning Ares for the creation of a smoke-screen to drive away the flies will be tried, but it may, be found that the smoke makes work- ing conditions too unpleasant for. the coolles.
Flies which are attracted to the refuse barges do not entirely de- vert the barges before they return empty to the city and this in spite of the fact that the barges are washed down with sea water be- fore they return. Steps will be taken to pray the the empty parges with kerosene emulsion.
