CHURCH'S CONTINUED PREFERENCE OF SMUG MORALITY Archbishop Of Canterbury Criticised

REV. J. D. MACLEAN ON KING EDWARD'S ABDICATION

Preaching in the Hong Kong Union Church yesterday morning. the Rev. J. D. MacLean, minister of the Kowloon Union Church, declared that to-day a large section of the British nation stood rebuked by the abdication of King Edward VIII, and the hardest rebuke fell upon the Church to which he belongs, and on him, its leader, who had seen fit to revile him publicly.

"The Archbishop of Canterbury's words are woefully revealing of his Church's continued preference of smug morality to daring Christian expression of Christian truth, a simpgness which even the loss of a King, whose service to the world and to Christ would have been even more valuable in the future than they have been in the past, has been unable to break," he remarked. The preacher emphasised, in the course of a searching sexmon, that it was more than a pity that those who love and believe in him would never be informed of the true facts, events and happenings, which led to King Edward's abdication, but it was regretfully certain that had he had a full Intelligent and articulate support from his professedly Christian subjects, even the possibility of losing him would never have arisen.
