HOW TO DRESS AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTIES
New Wool Fabrics Worn In The Evening
(By the Hon. Mrs. C. W. Forster)
Of late year little difference has been noticed in the choice of frocks for those in the "teens" and those in the "thirties," except perhaps in the spring-time, when debutante dresses become rather exalted.
In the main, frocks for 18 to No Yor the Christmas festivities will be similar, and in many cases mo- ther and daughter will exchange dinner gowns and wraps with im- punity.
White is often not the best choice for the debutante. Dusky pink soft blues and "pale greens, with every variety of parchment and black, are launched success- fully by either mothers, or their daughters.
Metal and wod weaves are two factors in the fabric world. The best solution for success is to mix A soft lacey wool in a the two, faint green looked well placed.over a shining silvery weave, a belt of silver kid with green wool dowers holding
the the simple lines of clinging wool frock.
A dark-haired hostess has cho- sen a cloth of pale gold as a suit- able underdress for a white wool fleecy tunic dusted with gold. The edge of the tunic and neckline, are to be edged with tiny black satin leaves. Black satin shoes and gloves will be worn.
*The
softness of the new wool weaves for evening wear, and their light warmth, make a sure appeal for winter. In a measure, these: warmer wool dresses, can now and again give furs a rest. In these times everyone possesses a coatee. 'or cape, of tailored elegance that provides warmth and also trans- forms a fudy evening garment into a practical demi-tollette:
Black still proves the beat style of dressing. Even for the gay holiday season black will be the height of elegance.
The new coloured accessories re- lieve any suggestion of mournful- ness. The coloured jewelled belt and bracelet and brilliant clusters of gay flowers in similar colours, for hair and corsage, are all popu- lar.

Fanciful gloves and shoes. can be even more fantastic when streamline frock is in black crepe, aatin or velvet. In fact, for the young and older woman a black ensemble is a sure standby, Ultra Auffy frocks in black tulle.and cire, lace are also becoming to certain types.
Many newer and real dancing frocks take in the wide range of accordion-pleated variety. Finely pleated chiffon or tulle-cire, cut. in the regulation infanta style, are always successful for the real ball. dress, and now that plainly tailored transparent coat can be added for cinema and cocktail party such a selection is by no means imprac- tical. Again, with black or white accordion-pleated over-dresses
a
metal or coloured satin slip can also be used to provide change.
I must suggest that wool wenves for evening, specially in black and dark shades, do require more care in putting on and a certain poise. to be successful" than silk and velvet.
The prettiest model. I have seen for a long time, and the most be- coming, is a closely woven deep hem and bolero of black wool allied to a fine net with bands of exquisite- ly embroidered glittering sequins..
The corsage is simple, the se- quins embroidering a shaped ber- the and velvet waist-band. The little wool bolero has long sleeves and jetted Links at wrist and waist. This is a perfect ensemble for dance or theatre, and I hear the designer intends to work out a similar model in tangerine shades for a dark, exotic beauty.
Black velvet will share its popu- this Chistmas with prune larky
The latter are and wine stades. lifted successfully into a lighter category by long gloves in pale claret. Suede or crepe shoes also stress this latest colour scheme, Clusters of grape pick up the light and dark tone in a little cipema cap of the type that is worn so satisfactorily by the piquant type of girl.
Older women find that wide wings of gold or silver give a dat tering finish to the semi-halo evening headdress that so well completes the perfectly moulded, dress in black crepe or velvet.
AROUND THE SHOPS
Shops, fascinating, at any time. are postitively magnetic at this par- ticular period of the year. These, days of such brilliant window- dressing and showroom display it is really a liberal education to "do the round" of the shops.
Just a peep at some of the lead- ing fashion and gift centres in the. city will suffice to indicate how at- tractive are the displays upon" which one can feast the eyes at any time during the day in a very pleasing and comfortable atmos- phere.
-Lane, Crawford's, for instance, have a superb selection of delight- ful Christmas gifts. Their range is remarkable, and they are priced to suit every purse. There are some lovely bags; a great variety in gloves and satchels. The famous Elizabeth Arden preparations are presented to the gaze in an allur- ing array: the "Week-end boxes" are a decidedly attractive feature.
Then there is Mayas where the millinery is both soothing and striking. Hats abound in all colours, shapes and size-all in good taste and very reasonably priced. Here one sees a "value and quality display featuring the very intest in felts.
Gowns galore, and in such mar- vellous array at Rivelle's where style is the supreme consideration for a decidedly discerning clientele. Taffetas, silk crepe and a promise of the very popular "cire" material, add lustre to a very scintillating selection of gowns and dresses.. Rivelle's reputation for "something just a little better" at moderate cost, is greatly enhanced by the present display.
Bargains that beggar description are in great profusion in the salon of the Siberian Furriers. They are conducting a clearance sale, and. really, some of the prices are The range 19 ridiculously low. large and the styles are exquisite.

What Well-Dressed
Women Are Wearing
How strange the revolutions of the wheel of fashion are, Some times the wheel turns slowly, and Sometimes it "revolves "with unex- pected.rapidity.
Take the vogue of the coatee a worn in the evening. A few years 'ago no one dreamt of going out at night without a coatee, generally oz velvet in some bright shade. After
a while the coatee dis- appeared and the cape was all- prevailing. Capes, or rather cape- lets, for they were never long ones, had taken the place of the coater, and they were made of diaphanous materials, of feathers, or of velvet "To-day the coatee has appeared diferent Luddenly, though "in a form. Now it is in fact à facket. rather close-fitting as a rule, and has a decided basque or skirt to It. Sleeves, too, are of importance... They are elbow length often, or even shorter: Whether they reach to the wrist or not they must have, impressive fulness at the top. All of which detail in very interesting and attractive.
