South China "A" Defeat Ulster Rifles
SHIELD ENCOUNTER
Thousands packed the Sook unpoo enclosure yesterday after- noon to witness the Senior Shield football match played between. the South China "A" and the Royal Ulster Rifles. The Chinese · won by two reals to nil after a splendid game.
At Kowloon, the Royal Welch Fusiliers disposed of the Police by the only goal scored.
On Saturday, South China "B" (holders) defeated the Hong Kong Football Club by 1-0 while St. Joseph's and Recreto drew 3-3 after extra time,
SPLENDID MATCH
DESCRIBED
(BY VOX POPULI) " Yesterday. the Royal Ulster Rifes made a graceful exit from the Senior Shield competition at Sockunpoo where they bowed in defeat at the hands of South Chita "A" to the tune of two goals the to nit. Although beaten. Ulster Rifles proudly displayed "the Irish in us" and fought game- ly to the last. A record crowd at- tended.
Referee Payne had charge of the game. Promptly at 4 p.m. he lined up the following teams!-
R.U.R.: Connor: Pickering. Stevens: McGonigal. Moore, Mill- Erwin, Campbell. Ferguson. Coyle and Killen.
er:
5. China "A"-Pau Ka-ping: Lee Ting-sang. Tam Kwong-pak; Leung Wing-chlu, Weng Mel-shun. Lee Kwok-wai; Tad Kwal-shing, Lai Shlu-wing, Fing King-cheung. Ho Kar-keung. Cheng Kwal- Jeung
Rifles had two changes from the team which drew with South China "A" some time ago. Coyle played Inside left
Doherty in place of whilst Killen replaced Hartigan who is still on the injured list.
South China won the toes and set the Rifles to face a weak glim- mer of sun. Royal Ulster Rifles; pressed from the start but hard luck and sterling work on the part of Lee Ting-sang and Tam Kweng- pak prevented a score Soon how- ever the pressure eased up and in
a South Chine attack Pickering
conceded a comer which almost

fort. Things looked mighty dangerous when Mc. Gonigal fouled Lal Kwok-wal, Ex- citement was now at fever pitch.
From an obvious foul by Camp- bell, Bouth China in the resultant Kick drew first blood through Ho Kar Kuen. A few seconds later only brilliant saving by Connor in the Ulsters' goals saved a certain- ty from the same player. The
bustling tactics of the Chinese
were not too pleasant to watch and many were the caustic com- ments from the spectators. Half time arrived with the score stand- Ing at one to none for the Chin-

the resumption. Rifles pressed again. and were awarded a comer. This was, how- attack Ever. fruitless' and the Proved to be short lived for South China now came away and so wot- ried the Rifles defence that they were forced to give away two more comers. Rider pressed again and were awarded another corner. What a match of corner kicks, Back came the attack and South China had hard lines when Picker- ing missed but were granted a corner which Connor promptly saved. A few minutes later Ho Kar-keung scored another scor- cher for South China, following a melee in the Rifles goals. To add to their misfortune, Moore, the Rides' centre half became a crip- ple and had to retire. He resumed in a few minutes but remained a passenger for the remainder of the game which ended with South China running put victors by two goals to none.
wing crossed beautifully and Tang Yai-ming Jumped high to save. A good run by Chan Bing-to ended in Hong Ling-to shooting past. Play was fairly even with Eastern press- Ing hard but the Athletic backs wave nothing away. Good com- bination by the Easterns' forwards ended in their outside left driving At the other end Lee Tak- over. ki had a great drive saved by Tang his shot Fal-ming who turned around the post. From the T- Kwok Ying-kak sultant corner
dashed in to score for Athletic, After this goal Athletic continued to press and in one of their bom- bardments Cheong- Mon-wing drove against the post and from rebound Kwok Ying-kak the scored another goal.
Eastern now livened up and in a breakaway Hon Sing-to had a shot partly saved by Lam Kwan-kon but Chan Bing-lo running in miss- ed narrowly. During Athletic raids Ng Ying-kay was prominent in de- fence for Eastern. Just on half time a hand ball was given against Ng Tak-wing and Cheung Sul- hong
with made no mistake the penalty.
Play was even from the start of the second half. Eastern almost scored early on when Chan Yuk miskicked in the goal mouth. After this Athletic enjoyed most of the play although Eastern had an
usually occasional breakaway spoiled by weak finishing by their forwards. In one of these break-

Play now became rather dull. Cheung Men-wing, who was play- ing a good game for Athletic,

crossed well and Chu Lee had a sayed somewhat rasping drive luckily by Tang Yal-hing. For Eastern Boong Ling-sing broke through and had a good drive go narrowly past the upright. A nice movement by Chin Chi-fun ended ini La! Wah-dal driving inches wide. Athletic pressed up to the finish. Athletic just about de- served their win. the score being a good reflection on the run of play.
JUNIOR SHIELD
EASTERN v. POLİCE
In the later stages of their en- counter with Eastern at Cause- way Bay Police over-ran their rivals. Eastern pressed at the itart and Lam Han-chi shot narrowly past the upright. Police now took matters in hand and Kong Ching had hard lines in not scoring. Police enjoyed most of the play during the first half and should have held a comfortable lead. However half time arrived with the score sheet blank.
Right from the start of the sec- ond half Paice attacked and miss- ed many scoring opportunities. Ho Chi-yung was prominent for East-
ern.
Towards the end of the sec- ond half the Police ran riot and scored quick goals per Wong Chan- yue, Ip Eel-yui (3) and Chan Winx-kun (1). Fasterns only goal was scored by Yeung King-fung.
R.U.R. v. CHINESE POLICE
On the whole it was not a par- ticularly Pleasing match Surely a much cleaner and more up-to- date standard of play must be ex- pected from an Olympic Team. To say the East of 1 their play was sometimes bordering on filthy and it did not do much to en- hance their reputation.
Only for the sterling defence of goals were allowed. those two inveterate workers, Stevens and Pickering, the score might have been much heavier as the Rifles Went the wrong way about their work and failed to play the Chinese at their own
game.
