Big musical comedy productions by amateur companies are usually undertaken in a spielt of laudable ambition and excented in a manner of laughable inadequacy. So, when I tip-toed into. the stalls at the Queen's Theatre. yesterday morning to witness the dress rehearsal of "The Maid of the Mountalang" by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, I harboured my own, unspoken prejudices and misgivings. `They were immediately dispalled. Even in the drab and damping atmosphere of a dress rehearsal with. little or no audience to play-up fo, and those necessary but Irritating interruptions by producer and conductor, this rehearsal Este great promise.

In fact, having witnessed innumerable rehearsals of both pro- fessional and amateur companies, I can sincerely state this one yesterday ranks, in my estimation, 23 one of the best.
