"Naval Reserve A

-Fine Idea"

The following letters have been exchanged between Lord Runci- man, the 89-year-old shipowner, and Sir Samuel Hoare, First Lord of the Admiralty:

My dear Sir Samuel Hoare, Regarding your suggestion that yacht owners and" yachtamen should become attached to a Naval Reserve. I think it a Ane, original idea, and would like to have particulars of your

plan. If the conditions are not prohi- bitory-age limit, for one I would like to join,

I am in my both year, but can still handle a big or small sailing vessel," mend or fake a sail and handle a marlinspike; but have në testimonials, so would have to be taken on trust!

7

Anyway, I wish you and your naval polley complete success,

Yours faithfully,

(Signed) RUNCIMAN,

SIR S. HOARE'S REPLY

Dear Lord Runcimani,

I write to thank you for your helpful and friendly letter.

There is no one's help that I would appreciate more than your.

Your long and active life OWIL. must have given you as great knowledge of the sea and ships as that of anyone in the land.

I am arranging to have parti- culars sent to you about the new Reserve. The age for entry is from 18 to 38. I fear, therefore, that according to the strict inter- of the conditions you pretation would not be eligible.

New Submarines

The submarine Grampus is to be commission at Chatham Dock- yard for trials and for service in the 2nd Flotula, Home Fleet. Lieu- tenant-Commander R." W. Moir, late in command of the submarine Orpheus in China, commands this new vessel

With the commissioning of the Grampus all three of the submar ines of the 1933 construction pro- gramme will be in service. There remain under construction, or au- thorized to be bullt, a total of 14 submarines, three of the 1934 pro- gramme, three of 1935, and eight of 1836 four in the original pro- the gramme and four more in supplementary programme pub- lished on July 9). The three sub- marines of 1934 have been launch- ed; one, the Spearfish, left Bir- kenhead for her trials on October 6. and the Rorqual and Sunfish should follow her into service early The three of 1935 were in 1937. not ordered until February and March, 1936, and laid down be tween May and July. These are, the Cachalot, minelayer; the Ster- let, of the small Swordfish class; and the Triton, first of a new class designed for general service.

The eight submarines of the 1936

programme have now been ordered. Contracts for three of a new small type, the Unity class, to be built by Vickers-Armstrongs, were announced in "The Timer" recently: one vessel of the new Trition class, E.MS. Thetis, has already been ordered from Messrs. Cammell Laird: the minelayer Seal is to be built at Chatham Dockyard; and the placing of the orders for the Triumph. Trident, and Tribune, all of the Triton class, is also announced.
