VINES BEATS TILDEN
Rough Sea Voyage Upsets Form
BUT BOTH GIVE OF
THEIR BEST
Tilden and Vines played their third encounter on the local courts yesterday before a fairly large crowd whieh Included HE the Governor Sir Andrew Cal- decott.
by Capt. accompanied Cragg. A.D.C. Major R. D. Walker of the Kowloon Canton Railway was also an interested spectator with Fils Excellency,
Both players were not feeling too well in health, having had a very rough trip to this port from Ma- nila. Although there was a crop of
both "mistakes" by
players the exhibition WES very interesting. There was a great deal more net play yesterday than in their pre- vlous exhibitions.
FORCEFUL VINES The first set was well fought out.Vines was the more force-
ful of the two and stormed the AI- net on numerous occasions. though Tilden passed him several times with sharp backhand cross Court drives.. Vines scored many points at the net with neat adgled volleys and smashes.
Tilden on the other hand play- ed a baseline game and was re- sponsible for some very well plac- Vines took the first net ed lobs at seven games to five and started off the second set like a house on fire. He took four games in a row by forceful" tennis Tilden could not withstand.
TILDEN - WINS
which
- Tilden however fought back and with Vines making many mistakes allowed Tilden to reel off six games to take the second set at six games to four.
The third set was more or less a repetition of the first set and was very evenly fought out. Tilden started off with 3 slight lead playing good tennis but was 5001 levelled by Vines. The games went first to one player and then to the other until Vines Anally broke through Tilden's service to win the set by seven games to
five.
The fourth set was a cakewalk for Vines, playing super tennis against a tired opponent he took.. the set to love.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS The game
Was noteworthy for the net game by Vines and the nest drop shots by both players. Both also showed that they pos- sessed very powerful drives which Tilden mixed occasionally with slice and chop.

A very flus spectacle, just prior to the cominencement of the game, was, the appearance of the com pletė Battalion of the Worcester Regiment, marching on to the field to the sound of the" bands playing a military march. Considering the fact that they had just disembark- ed from the H. M. T. Dilwara, the men looked very smart and well turned out.
The game itself was played in a very sporting manner, the conduct of the players of both teams being beyond reproach.
