DYSENTERY SCOURGE
Adults Affected Now
Two Critical Cases
MORE CHILDREN REPORTED
Criticism Of Authorities In Letters
It seems that, the dysentery scourge is spreading to adults. whilst at the same time further cases of children have been re- ported. 12
It was stated in these columns yesterday that a Chinese youth from the University had been admitted to the Govern- ment Civil Hospital. Information was" received yesterday that two more cases-very serious ones had been admitted to hoa- pitals.
These sufferers are:-
Commissioned Wireless Instructor P. J, Olding, attached to HALS. Tamar, who is in a critical state in the Naval Hospital, and his wife who is, also seriously III in the Kowloon Hospital.
It was stated by Dr. G. W. Pope, Medical Officer of Health, that two pretty definite cases" of dysentery were reported yes- terday. Both cases were Chinese children.
There were also three cases concerning European children but these, according to Information supplied to Dr. Pupe by the medical practitioners attending the cases, were of a very mild type and the doctors in charge of the eases were quite convinced that these cases in question had nothing to do with the epidemic. The cases could be regarded as "outsiders.”
Of the two Chinese cases one was that of a boy, the son of servants employed by a. European family whose own child fell a victim to dysentery and died. It appears, according to in- formation supplled to the Medical Officer of Health, that the child's mother had ordered the removal of the dead infant's clothing and belongings.
Apparently, owing to a slight error on the part of the servant, his son became affected with the disease.
Is It Spreading?
The fact that, grown-ups are also suffering from dysentery, does that mean that the disease is spreading? Dr. Pope was asked. "
Dr. Pope replied that there was always a certain amount of this thing and It was what one could call "secondary."
Patience Taxed To Utmost”.
[The Editor, "Hong Kong Daily Press.")
Dear Sir, We have never had anything like the present dysentery scourge in the Colony, and, of course, we all sincerely hope it will never occur again. However,' as "Anxious” says in your correspondence, what assurance have we that precautionary measures will be maintained in the future? As far as I can see we have none.
Remember, this outbreak has resulted in seven deaths, and. each death has been a tragedy. Now older people are being affected. What is the good of the authorities saying that dysen- tery is lessening when it is common knowledge that additional cases are being reported? The authorities are taxing the pa- tience of the public to the very utmost, and the sooner they pub-. lish their report the better. Certainly the better for them.
It will at least be interesting to know what they have taken all this long time about.
Yours, etc..

"Was It The Milk?"
[The Editor, ""Hong Kong Dally Press."]
Dear Sir, Quite rightly a correspondent in this (Thursday)- morning's "Daily Press" comments about carefully locking the door after the horse has bolted. Now, is not that exactly the present case? What we want to know is, what precautions were. taken BEFORE the outbreak, and what precautions are being taken NOW by the responsible public health authorities? Sure- ly a lengthy "preliminary" report is unnecessary to answer such simple questions.
Another question. Was it the milk? If so, then from what dairy or dairies was the milk supplied to those children who died? Does the truth cost too much?
Yours sincerely,
*

"Make Dysentery Notifiable”
[The Editor, "Hong Kong Dally Prema."] Dear Sir, I have read with the greatest interest all the ex- cellent reports and constructive letters which you have published re. the dysentery scourge, and it appears to me quite inexcusabia of the Government NOT to have made dysentery a notifiable diè esso. Burely that would simplify matters considerably, leading, as it would, to early detection which would be followed by speedy investigation.
As matters stand, the authorities seem willing to rely upon the no-operation of private practitioners. That is alright as" far as it goes, but, does it go very fart
Yours sincerely.

"Why Only Preliminary Report?"
· [The Editor, “Hong Kong Daily Fress.”). Dear Sir,-You have caused a stir alright, and it was needed. The letters in the "Daily Press this morning (Thursday) indi cate in no uncertain manner that there are yet those in the Colony who would be willing to act fearlessly in the cause of re- form.
You state in your report to-day that a preliminary report by the Government medical authorities has been promised, and will be issued soon. That is not by any means satisfactory Why only a "preliminary reparát:" And that word “soon!??. We all

"Hit The Nail On The Head"
[The Editor, "Hong Kong Daily Pross."]
Dear Sir, I think your correspondent "Milkfed" has hit the nail on the head when be suggests that, in the public Interest," the investigating, authorities should make known the name or names of suppliers of milk the moment infection is traced..
I do not agree with one of your other correspondents who suggests that a Commission of Inquiry be appointed locally. It anything of that nature has to be done, and I personally con- alder it would be a step only excusable in the very last instance, then it should be done from the Home end, IN
