· UNIVERSITY! LECTURE

Mechanical

Calculators

An interesting lecture was gyen by Mr. D. W. Morley, of the En- gineering Faculty of the Hong Kong University, at a meeting of the Hong Kong University En- sineering Society.

The title of the lecture was “Mechanical Calçulators,” and Mr. Mor.ey was ably asslated by one of the students with appropriate Iantern sides.

Representatives were chosen by the first and second year students. For the first year members: Chan Po King and Frederic Ying; second year: Lew Allaye.

Mr. Morley said: r'am going to try to describe. the essential mechanical features of calculating machines, not of the logarithmic scale dr side-rule variety, Such

seen in machines are frequently shops, in the form of cash regis- ters, and in offices as calculators for general arithmetical processes adding. subtracting, multiplying dividing, etc. These machines do for an accountant what would be done for a clerk if you could give him a typewriter capable of spell- ing correctly. (Laughter).

With a knowledge of the output

you will be in a position to appre- and appearance of the machines

The various Mustrations were then shown on the screen, 1

"Several objects may be in view when a firm buys a calculator or a shop keeper buys a cash register. Speed is one, but I think the ac- curacy that can" so easily achieved probably takes first place. Incidentally, this means that the machine must be absolutely 、 re- Immble, not subject to Ats of drop- ping a number here and there, and sufficiently robust to stand the handling it is likely to receive," said Mr. Morley.

After explaining the mechanism of the adding machines on dis- play, the lecturer concluded, "I hope that with the help of the model you have been able to gain some idea of the principle action. of these machines, and it only remains now for me to thank you for your attention, Prof. Robert- son for the lean of the Monroe machine. Prof. C. M Middleton-Smith proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker at the conclusion of the lecture.

Tea was later served.
