Never before in the history of this chamber have we enjoyed the distinction of doing honour to both the Chairman of the Provincial Government and to the Mayor of Canton at the same time. The or- casion is indeed one that calls for
a standard of eloquence far beyond my capabilities. I can but do my best and if, in the course of doing 80. I should strike an occasional note which appears to our guests as too informal" for the occasion. I would remind them that their visit is informal and the time is after dinner.

BRILLIANT CAREER
We are also honoured to have with us to-night a commercial de- legation composed of Canton's leading business and professional
men.
The delegation is led by Mr. Ho Tsap Ping, the Chairman of the United Chambers of Commérge of Kwangtung, who, by a happy coin- cidence, is closely connected in business with your Cháirman, a re-
litate that closer co-operation be- tween our two Chambers which we all desire. (Applause),

ROMANY FAIR
(To The Editor, "Hong Kong Daily Press").
Sir-Would you kindly allow us to express through your columns the very grateful thanks of Bt. Andrew's Church Romany Fair Commitee to all who in any way contributed to the success of the Fair held last week-end.
We should like to insert the names of firms, pubic bodies and individuals who specially helped us, but as some have expressed the wish that this should not be "done. we confine ourselves to this general expression of gratitude. We also thank the public at large for their support again this year.
Although the final figures are not yet available it is probable that the proceeds will be at least as high as in previous years.".

We therefore look forward with confidence to the Na-quarters. tional Dollar shortly becoming its recognised currency. (Applause).
By a happy coincidence, there occurred to-day ́an incident which draws still closer the bonds of cam- mercial union which inevitably link China and Hong Kong. I re- fer to the first landing at Kal Tak of the
aeroplane service which carries malls and passengers be- tween Shanghai and Canton. It is a matter of great satisfaction to all of us that this very natural and sensible arrangement has now teen made.. Hong Kong has al- ways been given the beneût of the domestic rate in respect of charges on mail between bere and China.
I am glad to learn that a similar rule will apply to the air mail link now inaugurated.
MATTER FOR REGRET
I think,
It is a matter for great regret to us that we have not been able to show the commercial party indus- trial development in Hong Kong on anything like the scale they showed it to us in Canton last year. The remarkable progress we witnessed during our enjoyable visit fully bears out the descrip- tion of it given by the American Economic Mission In their recent report that "a vast change is com- Ing over China, a modernisation nve years ago, marks many cen- that as compared with ten or even
turies." That phrase, aptly describes the great strides made in all directions and provides a striking contrast to the old ex- ploded idea that a century of change in China is the equivalent of but a few years of change in Europe. If His Honour the Mayor succeeds, as I sincerely hope be will, in carrying out the great schemes he has in mind for the improvement of his City and the welfare of his countrymen, his ad- ministration in Canton will as- suredly, mark a further century of progress. (Applause).
UNIFICATION
But, in my view, of all China's achievements, the unification of the country stands out above the rest. We used to think of uni fication

find fresh and encouraging evi- dence that Economic Nationalism, as practised to-day, has been proved a failure.
It is our earnest hope, so far as Hong Kong and, South China are concerned, that the personal con- tacts made between us during this exchange of visits may develop into friendships which will create such opportunities, and still fur- ther strengthen and promote the bonds or unity between this Colony and her great neighbour (Ap- plause).
Gentlemen, "Our Distinguished Guests from Canton." (Applause).
The toast was honoured with en- thusiasm.
GENERAL HUANG'S
REPLY
Gen. Huang Mu-sung replied: Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen:- We have come to Hong Kong to return the visit to His Excellency Governor Caldecott and it is most kind of you to entertain us so warmly to-night, for which we have to thank you heartily. Last year when you, the members of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, visited Canton, the arrangements made for you at our end were so imperfect that when we attend your elaborate banquet to-night we feel rather ashamed of ourselves.
