The tailored semi-sports dress which last season did duty from noon till dinner-time is being dis- placed this winter by the more .... ....... formal afternoon dress, "This new formal dress is simple in line and depends on its fabric and detail for its distinction. Soft black woolens Bre embrodered in 2, scattered design of dull black beads;-fine wools or crépes may be trimmed with braiding or with velvet or satin appliqués. Dresses in these materials have high close fitting or swathed necklines: pen- cli-straight almost tailored wool frocks have small turnover collar made entirely of beads or gold se- .. quins. The same type of frock in heavy, matt silk with a plain or eloqué finish is absolutely devold of-trimming and makes an effce- tive background to a necklace of many rows of pearls and a match- ing bracelet. Sleeves have a cer tain shoulder width but it closely to the wrist or to just below the elbow.
