Low. Scores In Senior Games

D. KNOX SHINES IN LAI

WAH CUP

The scores of football encounters in the First Division during the week-end were kept low lo, all games but the surprise came from the St. Joseph's who scored a 1-0 victory over the Rifles and Eave them their first defeat since the League commenced. Although the Police played a better brand of football, they suffered defeat at the hands of the Recreio eleven whose inside forwards proved- tricky in their attacking tactics.

The Lai Wah games played yesterday drew crowds of specia- tors to witness them and perhaps the more interesting of the two was the match between the Chinese and the Army which ended by the close score of 4 goals to 3. In the other encounter D. Knox shone brilliantly for the Civilians, scoring their four goals by himself, while the Navy side only managed to put the ball past the opposing custodian once.

HAT TRICK BY KNOX

Lai Wah Match Ends 4-1 For Civilians

An exciting football match was played yesterday afternoon, at the Kowloon Football Club when the Civillans beat the Navy in the first round of the Lal Wah Cup competition by four goals to one.

D. Knox was the outstanding player for the "Civica," securing all four foals The opening score was from a well timèd pass from Wilson and was equalised by Can- nell of the Navy.

The Navy's combination broke down towards the last fifteen min- utes of the game, and thus allowed the Civilians to get the upper hand which resulted in Knox perform ing a "hat-trick".

A slight alteration was made in The Civillan's team when Furrow of the Hong Kong Club played in place of A. S. Biles.

at. Happy Valley on Saturday. The Saints scored the only goal in the match 20 minutes after the kick-off when Leonard cleverly tricked Pickering after taking Ward's pass and sent Civilians in a curing shot well out of the reach of the opponents' custodian. Costa was prominent in the Saints' defence and made every use of his advantage in height to Intercept and clear the ball during the attieks. Bouza proved stumbling block to the advances of Ferguson and Doherty, while Mar- ques gave a courageous display between the sticks.

The Rifles lacked the finishing touches in their attacks and show- ed themselves weak and foulty in their shooting. Killen proved a poor substitute for Hartigan and the inside trio were very inept. Ferguson was always well covered and Campbell was slow in parting with the ball. FUSILIERS TOO

STRONG FOR NAVY

Paichy play featured throughout the Senior Division clash between the Navy and the Fusiliers at Causeway Bay on Saturday when the latter came off winners by 4 goals to 2.

The Navy forwards lacked cohesion and many of their ef- forts either hit the wrong side of the upright or were snatched from them by Rowlands. The victors proved too strong for the Navy, perhaps due to the fact that the 18sers Have not had many games together..

Ak a result of treating the op- position too lightly in the first hau of the game, the Fusiliers found themselves sharing two goals with them at the interval., The soldiers increased their pace in the second

half-time whistle that the score was evened. Evans gathered a pass from the right and shot first-time for "goal. The ball bounced from the goalie's hands and the centre-forward headed the ball in.

The second half opened with dull play but after Hughes had forced a lead for the Fusiliers, following a nice solo movement by Evans, the Navy had an irresistible period. Soon afterwards Evans tricked Wolverston with a rising shot. '*

The Navy launched an attack ten minutes from the final whistle which resulted in Cannel scoring for them but this goal was dis- puted by the opponents. The re- feree, however, ruled that the ball had passed beyond the line whit still in the hands of Rowlands. Ding-dong play followed until two minutes from time when the Fusi- liers were awarded a penalty for alleged hands by a Navy defender. Longley stopped the ball but could not prevent ft rolling trom his hands into the net.

POLICE WASTE EFFORTS

It is hoped to hold the Final on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Inspired by this initial goal Recreio launched another attack and Bel- trao increased the lead with a fine left drive. The Police then re- taliated and during their onslaught Willerton found the net to open their score.
