ROYAL NAVY

New Destroyers Begun

The keels were laid recently of the two destroyers of the Tribal from class ordered in May last W. Denny and Brothers, Limited, Dumbarton. All the ning destroy- ers of this class authorized in the orignal 1936 naval construction programme, and at present un- named, will then be on the stocks, atates "The Times"

The two destroyers ordered from the Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company, the hulls of which are being built by Vickers-Armstrongs, Limited, at Walker-on-Tyne, werz lald down on August 5. The vessel ordered from A. Stephen and Sons, Limited, was laid down at Ocvan, Glasgow, on September 24. Two days later, Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Limited, iaid down at Wallsend-on-Tyne the two vessels for which they received the contract, and the machinery of which will be supplied by the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company. On October 1, Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Com- pany laid down at Greenock the two for which they received the contract.

A reduction is also being made in the time spent as midshipmen, from two years and four months to two years. There will, however, be no alteration to the average age of promotion to lieutenant or lieu- tenant (E). extra time being spent as sub-lieutenant corresponding to the reduction in time spent under

training. The new measures are to be regarded as temporary, but the Admiralty state that they will require to remain in force for a number of years until the shortage of officers has been made up.

EARLIER PROMOTION - Details of the new order are as follows:-

Special entry and Mercantile Marine cadets, executive and engi- neering, are to undergo training in H.M.S. Frobisher for two terms an- ly. This decision is to become ef; fective for all such cadets joining HM.S. Frobisher in and after Sep tember, 1936.
