Foundation Stone

Stone Laid By Bishop Valtorta

BOON TO PENINSULA WHEN COMPLETED

The foundation stone of the new Children's Hospital and Orphanage building in grounds of the Precious Blood 'Convent at Shumshulpo was laid by the Bishop H. Valioris on Saturday afternoon in the" presence of a large gathering. The stone, was Inscribed as follows:-" To the Glory of God this Foundation Stone was laid by His Lordship thế Right Reverend Bishop H. Valtorta on October 3, 1936.” The Bishop was presented with a silver trowel by Messrs. Sum Tal & Co. the contractors of the new hospital.

After the ceremony the Chair- man (Mr. Tse Yung Kwong) ad- dressing the gathering said:—

"This building which is under construction is expected to be com pleted in 10 months' time and. by then it will be 3. boon to the Peninsula.

"The reason that we have not Deen afraid of encountering great- hardship in raising funds for the cost of erecting it shows its great Importance to the poor people. In view of the rapid development of the industriai districts on the mainland, the work being done in the Children's Hospital and Clinic increases beyond any conception. As has often been repeated since its inception if the year 1931, the need of expanding the hospital. which is at present housed, and in a small measure run, in à part of the Convent building, has been keenly felt by the Sisters and the doctors. A more spacious and bet- ter-equipped Institution should have been in existence long ago toj topp with the situation. But the enst of erecting the new hospital requires money, and it is very difficult for the Sisters and the smal? Hospital Committee to em bark upon such a big scheme.

that the good work of the noble doctors should not be checked from expanding by difficulties in getting money for putting up the building.

"With this object in view a com- mittee was separately formed on June 5, 1934, for the raising of funds, while the success of the scheme was greatly due to the valuable assistance of His Lordship, who obtained from the Governor- In-Council permission to use the site next to the convent for the purpose of building a hospital.

COMMUNITY THANKED Thanks to the geherosity of the community and the hard work of the energetic committee we have now in our possession, a sum of about $25,000 and a promise of about another $5.000, to be paid at a later date. It is a pleasure to mention that whilst we were in difficulties about raising enough funds, Mr. Fred Kew came to our assistance and kindly' consented to help us to undertake the super- vision of the building work,
