APPEAL FOR FUNDS

I'm П short time the Colony's Muslim orphans wu have a vom- fortable place in which to live: as the scheme of building a Muslim orphanage bus already been placed in the hands of the arch- sects.

Yesterday large gathering of | the Mus.im community as well as. a number of non-Muslims were present at the Mosque to witness the laying.o its toundation stone. The ceremony was performed by Hi Em nence Maulana Mohamed Aleem Siddiqui. the well-known theologian wao .s at present pay- ing a visit to the Colony before returning to India to-day.

Although a large sum has been subscribed funds are stil required to meet the expenses of building the orphanage; and during the meeting, a subscription was called," and many gave handsome dona- tons.

The plans of building of the orphanage will be prepared by Mr. E. M. Haseland, of Messrs. Haze-

tures. very important event in the annals of the Moham- medan Community in this Colony. Time does not permit me to delve into past history but I would like to briefly outline some of the facts connected with our OWN Com munity. It is not to be forgotten that we were one of the first

settlers to take part in the Colony's activities SCOD after British occupation. It may not be known to many of us of the pre- sent generation that it was more than 86 years ago that the ground upon which this Mosque is " built, was leased to the Mohammedan Community. To be more precise, I would mention that the Crown Lease was dated 23rd September 1850, the first Trustees being the late Shaik Moosdeen, Moharumed "Arab, Shalk Carthar and Hassan Malay. There were several other trusteeships since, the necessary changes being caused by effluxion of time, absence from the Colony, or death. There were four Trus- tees in the past but since the year 1911 the number of Trustees was increased to six.

During his short stay in the Colony he took a very keen interest in all matters touching the welfare of the Community and he specially stressed the urgent need of an orphanage and I am glad to say that his suggestion of erecting a home for orphans with- in the precints of the Mosque met with an enthusastic response and general approval.
