Derrick, in reply to a charge of
murder at the Old Bailey, plead-
ed self-defence, saying that Whee- BRITISH
ler attacked him with a truncheon when he returned to Wheeler's
house late at night in dn attempt
te patch up a quarrel they had over Derrick'a friendship with Mrs. Wheeler.
Derrick denied that there had bien any cause for jealousy. Be stated that he was a friend of the Wheeler family.
The Jury returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter, but not gulity of myder.

Berious divergencies of opinion have arisen between the President of the Spanish republic, Azana. and Premier Caballero, according to a message issued by the Na- tionalist radio station at Burgos. REASON FOR DECISION ́
Geneva, Sept. 23. It is reliably learned that the "Credentials Committee of the League of Nations Assembly has decided that in the circumstances there can be no point in appeal- ing to the Hague Court for a ruling regarding the validity of Ethiople's credentials, since it Ls learned, in any case, that the Ethio- plans would continue to sit in the Assembly. A ruling would merely complicate the issue. It is therefore believed the Credentials Committee will simply recommend that the delegation continue to alt and enjoy the rights of member- ship..."

“INTRIGUE
("Hong Kong Daily Press" Special)
Paris, Sept 24.
A starm .01 comument для criticism broke loose in the Paris right wing papers over the decision of the League of Nations to admit the Abyssinian De.egation to the sessions. The unanimous opinion is that this, decision is largely due to the efforts of the Soviet Rus- stan Foreign Minister, M. Maxim Litvinof.
The papers point out that Russia's main aim is to complicate negotiations between the western powers and to render the coming Five-Power conference fruitless.
The "Jour," analysing the situa- tion, says that the decision of the League indicates a new grouping of European powers. The Ger- man-Itullan solidarity is streng- thened, while the Italo-Austro- Hungarian bloc is not weakened. Portugal is slowly driving towards Italy, whlie Britain keeping up her old friendships, is slowly seeking new ones, with Turkey and Yugo- slavia. France alone will feel the adverse effects.
The "Matin" declares that Soviet Rusda, has been working behind the scenes för days in order to create disturbance. In this case. she has succeeded very well, making herself the ringleader in
discontent bringing about
