The two married couples then plan to leave China for Durban, South Africa, where "Bill" will open a surf-board manufacturing com- Durban is renowned for its pany. fine surf obtainable at its many beaches.
Surf-board riding has been es- tablished here due to the efforts of. Mr. Lawson Butt, who first in- troduced this entertaining water' sport at Repulse Bay some years ago. A Government ban on de- votees of the sport at this beach by limiting them to practise the pastime a quarter of a mile from shore, rather dampened the ardour of a growing band of sportsmen, but within the past season or two, Big Wave Bay has been selected as more sultable because of the bik surf running most of the time.
INCREASING NUMBERS
The present season has seen in-. creasing numbers taking to surf- board riding, with the result that a company was established to meet the demand. While Mr. Butt is away, a local representative will De in charge of the office,
When "B" Arst came to the Colony he was connected with the Sports Department of Messra. Lane, Crawford Ltd., who are now the sole distributors of his locally made surf-boards. Three years ago, Butt Joined the staff of Messra, "Mc-, Donnell and Gorman, then later established his own company.
During his stay in the Colony, Mr. Butt has been connected with the Victoria Recreation Club in 1932, when he took over a position as honorary cosch. His method, of training "coming" swimming stars, a number of whom are now per- forming withs
credit, called for deserved admiration. The follow- ing year (1833-34) saw him con- nected with the South China American football squad which engaged Lingnam University, Can ton, in a number of return fix- tures. Lately Mr. Butt has been swimming instructor at the Lido, Repulse Bay.
Prior to his arrival here, Mr. Batt was appointed coach at the Manila Central High School, where he trained the track and field as the basketball team, as well squad.
I understand that "B" will be' taking six surf-boards with him to Durban, which are
packed in a specially conceived mahogany case. friends The best wishes of bis will, I feel sure, be extended to Bill In his two new ventures.
