DYNAMITE AND PETROL ATTACK

Desperate Defence Of

Ruined Fortress

Toledo, September 19. Columns of smoke Issuing from the ruins of Alcazar nowW enshroud Toledo following instructions from the Government commander to attack the fortress with petrol. Firemen drenich- ed the occupied areas with thousands of gallons of motor spirit, which when ignited with bombs, burst into sheets of flames.

Facing a hall of bullets and burning petrol, one of the in- surgents dashed from the ruins and seized a hose from the fre- men and turned it on the Government positions. The man feil, riddled with bullets. The Government attempt, however, falled and has so far not been repeated.

Subsequently, the insurgents made a desperate sortie but were met with a heavy fusillade. Many fell dead and wounded-be- fore they retired. The Asturian dynamile throwers made a breach in the wall of the fortress wherein the attackers planted ma- chine guns ready for the next objective.--Reuter.

ARMISTICE EFFORTS

Madrid, Sept. 19.

A move to obtain a twenty-four- hour armistice. In the fighting for the Alcazar in Toledo was inlated by the Chilean Ambassador who. called a meeting of diplomats with a view to a last effort to save the lives of the women and children.

The Ambassador cabled the Pre- "sident of the League Counci, stat- ing that a twenty-four-hour armis- tice would save the lives of 900 women and children who are at the point of dying. The message adds that the present Government at tack on Alcazar with dynamite. bombardment and petrol gives this operation an infernal aspect.-

Other messages from Toledo alate that the attacks on the fortress were continued throughout Saturday. Desperate resistance

was offered by the defenders who are still holding out in the south- west corner of Alcazar and forced the Red commanders to reinforce the attacking forces.

Two detachments of Red militia attempted to advance from Plaża Descodoba and from the well- known hostelry bearing the name "Inn of Blood," but were 'repulsed by the machine gun fire of the defenders.

The bombardment by, the Red ar- tillery, whose batteries have taken up a position on the hillside near Alcazar, was aided by squadrons of bombing planes completing the work of destruction and gradually reducing the fortress to a heap of ruins.-

France To Urge Action

On Three Lines

EIGHTEEN REFORM SCHEMES

Geneva, September 19... Never has the League Assembly opening on Monday met in more menacing circumstances. The civil war in Spain, war talks at Nuremburg, Moscow's feverish rearmament, and the tense situation in Palestine all form an ominous background to the Assembly's deliberations. Yet none of these serious problems are likely to be discussed.

In order therefore to give the Assembly an aim, apart from lis general labours, the French Government will urge concerted action on three lines, namely disarmament, economic reorgani- sation and League reform.

On the disarmament side" the first step is likely to be the re-
