AS DRESS
DICTATOR
Fashion to-day hangs on a word. A this moment the would-be- well-dressed women in the capitals of the world are waiting, to hear what that word may be for the 1936-1937 autumn and winter,
For the all-decisive word that will be the passport to start dress- 14g changes each season. New fabrics, colours and cuts are not enough in themselves without the secret word that may turn model into a vogue,
FASHION'S PASSWORD
n
That is way the diplomats of dress are pulnered in Paris and London during August. They are seeing the creation.ofthe de- signers in the showrooms, and straining their ears in the lobbies of fashion or the word for which hundreds of thousands of women walt, the word that is to be dress mandate.
the
One season it was "assymetrical" -mysterious term which in sim- pler phrase conveyed the idea of fashion on the slant. "Kaleldas- copic" modes were based on col- gur merging. "Garcon" and "Yaga- bond" trends, for a time, charmed by their air of youthfal irrespon- sibility. "Cubist," "Geometrical" and. "Architectural" styles explain themselves.
STYLE CONSCIOUS A period when women became "style-conscious" was particularly interesting, It marked the height of ensemble; every detail from hat-clip down to toe tip contribut- ed to harmonious effect. "Form- moulding" brought back the waist- line and the shapely hip..
Two more recent examples of adjectival activity in dressmaking were "Wind-swept" and "Stream- lined," magnetic word this. thất Influenced much besides clothes.
What will be the next open- sesame to feminine smartness? "Floodlit" is mentioned tentative- 13. The next few weeks will de- cide at once the word and the autumn silhouette of vast numbers of women.

NEW DEVELOPMENT Fashion as a branch of philolo gical study is a new development. Once, the creators of fashions to come wandered the art galleries of Europe reviving from time to time distinguished-periods in the his- tory of costume. So, it was that Medici ruffle, Marie Stuart colf. Marie Antoinette Ochu, Gainsbo- rough hat or Empire waist renew- ed their youth from age to age.
Another school of designéra Bought inspiration in flower gar.. den and woodlands.
Now the dressmaker of enter- prise turns confidently to the dic- tionary and scans the columns until the word that best expresses the passing mod stands out and demands interpretation in fabric. line and cut. None will dare to challenge it until the next season produces yet another password.

FASHIONS
Many novelties have been pro-s duced in woollen materials for the
autumn. There are hairy woollens. tufted woollens, smooth woollens, new bouclets," some, of which have hairs woven on the surface, and a great number of interesting tweeds, There appears to be more colour than in previous years and many of the handsomest and most effective of the Scottish woollens show discreet uses of high colour,
Eldon tweeds, named after the hills between Melrose and Selkirk.. are rich in colour effects with shimmering greens and smoulder- ing reds lurking among darker tones and with an odd halry sur- face giving them a soft blodm. Among the Cumberland tweeds is "a lovely cloth in sult weight" in a mari mixture. An interesting fancy, weave shows a small 'square within a square on a plain colour- ed cloth; this is good in ride 'green, dark"royal, and dark brown.
The Sweetinburgh collection is very good this year. All the new woollens have clever descriptive names which distinguish them from one another.. 'Autumn cro- cus," a Scottish material, has firm little tufts in high colour in a fancy yarn on a dark-toried over- check. "Country Club is a heavy fancy yarn on dark neutral ground with blobs of colour mix tures: the effect is of a cross-dar splashed with colour. Typical mix- tures are a green ground with a cross-darn and blobs of mulberry, vivid grass--green, and a stab of scarlet: a cobalt ground with green, mulberry, and red; a fewn ground with mulberry, orange, and canary blobs.“ More subdued is the brown ground with russet, white, and dark. Among the fern colours are wet fem, smoky fern, and blue- wood fire.
A new Donegal tweed Bas' a snowy surface and is very coarse yet supple and firm. It la-flecked. with colour and is a heavy coating for travelling wrapa. Among the colour mixtures in which it is made are cream, mushroom, and apricot; fawn, amber, and mush- room; grey, cream, and very dark Vandyke-brown. "Stirrup-Cup" is a good material for suits for the country, as owing to the number of decks on soft mixture grounds any number of different coloured sweaters can be worn with It. The -new "Baa Baa Black Sheep" ma- terials how clever additions to the designs that can be made from the many shades in the woud or the black sheep. There are shadow checks, small checks, broken dé- signs, and herringbones.
Among the new fancy coatings for the autumn which have hair introduced, is a wool cloque “in two weights. There is a number of new bouclet cloths in both coat-weight and dress-weight, with raised effects on the surface. Most or these are Continental products.
