NORTHERN GREENS FAST

Hong Kong's lawn bowls contingent to battle against Shanghai next week for the Prentice Cup in the Interport series are leaving to-day for the North on board the C. P. S. liner Empress of Asia,

1

The Colony team of six players, comprising A. Hyde-Lay (Kowloon Cricket Club), A. E. Coates (Craigengower C. C.) F. V. V. Ribeiro and H. A. (Dick) Alves (Club de Recreio) and J. F. McGowan and P. E. Knight. (Civil Service Cricket Club) will arrive in Shanghai on Sunday,

"I have every copfidence in my team,” stated Mr. Hyde-lay, captain and manager of the side, when interviewed by a "Daily Press" representative.

Asked abou; Hong Kong's chan- tes against their Northern rivals, Mr. Hyde-Lay replied that he could make no statement other than that he felt sure his rink would do their level best to try and win the series and thus wrest the Prentice Cup which has remained in Shanghai since 1934.

Since 1918, Shanghal has won the Interport on ten occasions to Hong Kong's eight.

FASTER GREENS

It has been generally conceded that Bhanghai's greens, on the whole, are much faster than those.

in the Colony, and this will pro- Bably prove the deciding factor. Of the Hong Kong team, both the captain and Coates, the Colony bowls singles champion, bave play ed in the North, before.

Much will depend on the ability of Coates, who will probably play

No. 1.

The Colony champion draws ex- ceptionally well on the local greens as was witnessed in the singles Anal played on the Kowloon Bowl ing Green Club green. His draw ing was perfection and if he can attain the same form "against Shanghal he should give Hong Kong a good foundation.

PROBABLE RINK

Mr. Hyde-Lay also stated to our, representative that he would not

be able to decide positions in the rink until they arrive in Shanghai

A. E. Coates (No. 1)

H. A, Alves (No. 2)

F. V. V. Ribeiro (No. 3)

A. Hyde-Lay (Skip).

'Dick Alves, the Recrelo skip, is making his second appearance in Interport bowls. He played No. 2 iz the second match of the series last year when the Colony lost to Shanghai by the odd game. Alves can be relied on for some really good woods.

NEWCOMERS ·

Ribeiro, who was selected when H. H. Rose, of the Kowloon B.G.C., who was originally chosen but could not obtain leave, is a stendy No. 3 and should give a good account of himself.

McGowan and Phil Knight are making their debut as representa tives of the Colony. Both play re- gularly for the Civil Service C. C.

in the League and it will be inter-

eating to see how they fare against the Northern teams.
