EIGHT VERSIONS
Eight different versions of the story of John Butter have been written by authors who. felt themselves impelled to relate the narrative 01 the heroic figure, so strong was the human Interest that he awakened. Sutter appealed to readers as much as he did to writers.
France was the first country to publish, Blaise Cendrar's novel "Butter's Gold," which has sold two minion copies, in France alone. In Germany, five plays have been produced dealing with this romantic character,
Almost all the authentic data about General Sutter was burn- ed in the San Francisco fire, except for a small part of his personal diary. Small wonder then that the various authors cannot agree on all points.

The Universal picture, starring Edward Arnold as John Sutter, adapted from Cendrar'a novel. The more colourful por- tions were chosen with the re- sult that a creditable and in- Cansely interesting picture has been produced.
FORGOTTEN FACES
History
General John Sutter, first colonizer of California, built fabulous fortune and then his empire was destroyed, dae to the gold rush of 1849. This la vividly portrayed in 'Sutcer's Gold" starring Edward Arnold and Lee Tracy, which is to be shown at the Queen's Theatre In the near future. I say this without any fear of contradition. Lee Tracy as. Pete Perkin galant pa! of the “general” was never better and these two walk away with the acting honours.
"Sutter's Gold" In pointed. the dynamic episodes reveals In short space of an hour, history in the making. The gold rush in California, when Sutter is robbed of his lands by frenzied horders who dig up and destroy his pro- perty, is shown with cameratic perfection that is practically flaw- less.

Full marks must be given to the
make-up experts who at- tended both Arnold and Lee in these fade-cuts. for both charac- ters appear to be genuinely old. Binnie Barnes, British screen aç- tress adds further laurels with her acting.
The picture is one that should ON To account be missed. Not only are the acting of all concern- ed as perfect as might reasonably be expected, but the film portrays real history. It is a picture blography of a colourful pioneer, who was ruthlessly robbed by the "gold rush," and died heart- broken man on the steps leading to the Senate House. Washington,
