asked to define the Oxford accent. THE Undersigned save received and said there was no such thing.
This fallacy, he added, was started some 30 thirty years REO. and Oxford men had always de- scribed it as the Balliol accent.
"As Balllet is primarily a college for Scottish students," Mr. Bland- ford added, "I can only suggest that it was an attempt by Scottish undergraduates to introduce some refinements of English pronuncia- tion into their speech, which in time came to be associated with Oxford University as a whole.”
