Increase In Imports During
Past Seven Months

An Interim report issued by the Statistical Office of the Im- ports and Exports Department on the trade of the Colony for July, 1936, states that imports of merchandise amounted to total of $36.4 millions (£2.3 millions), as compared with $26.7 millions (£2.8 millions) in July, 1935: a dollar increase of 36.3 per cent, and a sterling decrease of 17.9 per cent; whilst exports totalled $26.2 millions (£1.7 millions), as compared with $18.9 millions (£1.3 millions); a dollar increase of 45.6 per cent, and a sterling decrease of 10.5 per cent.

CRIMINAL SESSIONS TRIAL
A jury at the Criminal Sessions yesterday returned a ver. dict of guilty against three Chinese men who were arraigned before the Chief Justice, Sir Athöll MacGregor, abarred with the possession of a quantity of heroin stated by the Government, Monopoly Analyst to be capable of manufacturing 674,000 pills. "I prefer to defer sentence on you three until the last of the series of these abominable cases has been heard," remarked his Lordship after the verdict waa sanounced.

"SNATCH LOCK" Revenue Officer A. W. Grimmitt was the first witness for the Crown. Evidence was given also regard- ing the locked back ped-room. Mr. Grimmitt described the lock as a "snatch lock." The trick was in opening it from the outside on a pulley combination attached to a string. It was rather delicate, and no unauthorised person would
know about it.
