THE POLICY OF IMPERIAL AIRWAYS
Striking Tribute From Mr. Fokker
"STEADY LINES OF
DEVELOPMENT”
One of the most remarkable tributes ever paid by a great expert of one country to the air transport polley of another has just been voiced in Amsterdam by Mr. Anthony Fokker, the famous Dutch designer and constructor, whose war-planes and commer cizi aircraft have won hun fame throughout the world.
Mr. Fokker was discussing with the Amsterdam correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" the ampli- fled Empire air-mail scheme which Is to come into operation next year, and for which Imperial Air- ways have under construction à Bleet of 28 huge Aylug-boats and 12 giant land-planes.
"I have," declared Mt. Fokker, "the greatest admiration for the steady lines of development which Imperial Airways have followed. I have also noticed that this is the policy of British aviation gener- ally.
"Imperial Airways," Mr. Fokker added, "have never allowed them-- selves to be influenced by the tem- porary spurts or competitors, al- though they have used these as stimulating influences. I put them up as an example to others. my ́own country included."
The policy which has gained the admiration of such a great expert as Mr. Fokker-whose transport- planes are in operation in all parts of the globe-is one which seeks always the most effective compro- mise between air speed and cost and which, at the same time; aims tu ensure the highest possible fac- tors of reliability and comfort. Very high speeds' being costly in the air, as they are on land and sea, the policy of Imperial Airways is not one of an extreme speed. which only a few could afford, but the provision of air services fast enough to be within the means of a maximum number of users, and with the object constantly in view, also. that British air transport is expected to become self-support- ing, without needing any further air from the State, at the earlleat practicable moment.

sibie cost were indicated recently n the House of Commons by Sir Philip Sassoon, Under-Secretary of State for Air. He pointed out that in the latest year for which compiere figures are available im- perial Airways carried a ton-mile- age some 25 per cent greater than the French, 150 per cent grea- ter than their Italian, and 50 per cept greater than the Dutch, competitors. "And I expect." he added, "that the traffic figures for 1935, when avullable, will make an even better comparative showing."
Referring the question of State subsidies, the Under-Secret- ary of State observed: "In 1935 the Imperial Airways subsidy was a little more than one-third of that enjoyed by the French, about hair that of the Germans, and about two-thirds of that of the Italians. Put in diferent form, whereas the subsidy paid by the French per ton-mile carried, in the latest year for which we have figures, appears to have been about nine shillings, and the corresponding German and Italian figures about four shillings and eleven shillings respectively, that paid to Imperial Airways is now down to something under two shillings."

DUPLICATION OF THE BRISBANE SINGAPORE
AIR SERVICE
The duplication by Qantas Emm- pire airwaya of the Bria- sane-Singapore sections route
of the Australia-England...
two

services each way week- now being flown between London and Brisbane-comes as great boon to air travellers in Aus- tralia. Residents in Western Queensland towns can, for exam- ple, travel by air to Brisbane, spend a day and a half in that city, and and the return home, all in the space of three days. Prior to the advent of the air service, Darwin's sole link with the south was by a monthly steamer service. Austra- llan budiness men can now dy to Singapore, apend 5 days there, and return to Brisbane-all in less than a fortnight. By sea a similar trip would take six weeks. The m- creased passenger accommodation available, as a result of the dupli- cated..services, has enabled air- fares to be reduced." From Bris- bane to Singapore, for instance, the fare has been reduced from £80 to £65.
