"At a general meeting of members of the Hong Kong Gene- ral Chamber of Commerce held yesterday, Mr. A. W. Hughes, of the China Fire Insurance, Co. Ltd., was appointed member of "the Chamber for appointment to the Legislative Council in place
of the Hon. Mr. W. H. Bell.
In a letter read to the meeting by the Hon. Mr, S. H. Dodweli (Chairman) received from the Hon. Mr. Bell stating his reasons for resigning this post, the writer explained that owing to increased pressure of work enforced by the uncertain conditions in the north and his Impending retirement from the Colony in the autumn. he felt he was reluctantly com- pelled to resign as he could not devote suficient time to the Council,

The Hon.. Mr. W: H Ball was first appointed as a member of the Chamber to the Legislative Council on March 21. 1932 during the absence on leave cf Mr. C G. 8 "Mackle. On February 8, 1933 Mr. Mackie returned to the Colony from Furlough, and resumed his appointment in the Législative Council which he resigned in 1935. The Hon. Mr. Bell Was then appointed on April 5, last year in place of Mr. Mackie, and has held the appointment since then.

FOR HONG KONG
During the next Trooping Sea- son, the 1st Kumaon Rines will be stationed here in place of the pre- sent 1/8 Punjab Regiment, The Punjab will be leaving Hong Kong, The Kumaon Rifles were formed at Ranikhet as the 4-39th Garhwal Rifles by Lieut.-Col. E. M. Lang in October, 1917. Later they adopted
their present name. They are not due here until November and the Punjabis do not leave Hong Kong
until December.
