Chicago, July 7. The Middle Western states have entered their fith consecutive day of record-breaking temperatures, which have risen as high as 119 degrees. And there is still no sign of respite.

Already

twenty-three deaths from prostration or drowning have occurred. Every beach within reach of the puble in the crowded cities is packed with cager humanity.

The searing drought is playing havoc with crops over a large area. The spring wheat belt is partl- cularly badly hit. Crop losses are estimated up to the present, at $300,000,000.--- Heuter.

RELIEF MEASUKES

Washington, July 7. President Franklin D. Roosevelt has moved swiftly to relleve the drought-stricken Middle West.

The Chlef Executive announced tq-day plans for a vast relief pro- gramme to assist nearly a million persons in the drought area.

GOVERNMENT'S DUTY OUTLINED

London, July 8.

The High Commissioner in Palestine last night broadcast a personal message to that country in which, after emphasking" his personal distaste for the misery and bloodshed caused by the disorders, he stressed the firm determination of the Gov- ernment to restore order. "

He said he wished to bring about peace speedily and for this purpose to encourage the growth of "public oinion, openly con- demning all crime violence and intimidation and exposing mis- representation.
