THE FUTURE OF EMPIRE AIR

TRANSPORT

Yesterday's Broadcast Talk

Mr. M. H. Curtis of the Imperial Airways deliver. et the following (the second) broadcast talk yesterday evening,

Those listeners who heard my talk last month will recollect that I emphasized the importance of the international aspect of air transport, gave a brief resume of the development of the Empire alc. lines up to the present me, and Visualized the probable trend of Empire air transport in the fu- ture, consequent upon the mo- mentous decision of the British Government that from 1937 all Arst class malls will, wherever possible within the Empire, be carried by air.

I now want to enlarge on the considerations leading to the far- reaching decision, to give a brief outline of the new operational methods it will decessitate, and endeavour to give you a picture of the Heet of giant aircraft now under construction to cope with these altered circumstances

following this policy is only too obvious and needs no further elucidation.

Secondly, the existing subsidy plan could have been extended. thus making possible advances in speed, comfort and security of ser- vices but still carrying air mail on a surcharge basis. This polley would have been rather too can- servative and would have tended to retard the achievement of the de- sired financial independence of the operating Company which is made much more httainable by the third polles possible: that policy is the

of the abandonment

surcharge system and the carriage of the whole of the letter" mail withous surcharge.

If any doubts exist as to the wisdom of adopting this policy they will surely be removed by the following briet summary of the enormous advantages involved:

Secondly, the enormous quantity of mail to be carried will justify the provision of extensive ground organization to permit day and night flying with a consequent Ereat increase in overall speeds.

Thirdly, it will naturally result in a greatly increased frequency of services which will, in effect, be as valuable-or even more valu- able-than higher flying specds which would entail higher costs and less safe operation.

Fourtly, the size of aircraft cau be increased permitting vastly im- proved passenger comfort and con- reniences with appreciable reduc-

The new flying boats, of which you have all no doubt seen pir. tures, are being built by the fa- aircraft construction com- mous pany, Short Brothers of Roches- the latest dis- ter, and embody coveries in aeronautical engineer- ing and aircraft safety devices. They are high wing flying monoplanes with a fully laden weight of nearly 18 tons and have a pay load (that is, a saleable capacity), of, between 34-4 tons under normal operating condi- tlons.
