Mahmoud's Derby
AN EASY WINNER
London, May 23.
The Aga Khan's Mahmoud, by Blenheim out ot Mah Mahal, trained by F. Butters at New- market and ridden by C. Smirke, won the Derby at Epsom yesterday afternoon by three lengths from the same owner's Taj Akbar, also trained by F. Butters, and ridden by Gordon Richards. Thankerton, owned by Mrs. J.. Shand, trained by G. Armatrong at Middleham, and ridden by T. Burns, was third, three-quarters of a length behind the second. The time taken, 2min. 33, 4-5sec., was a record:
The afternoon's programme was begun with an all-aged selling plate which, to the obvious satis- taction of many visitors to the meeting, was won by Poet's Pride, ridden by Gordon Richards. Ir.destructible took the lead entering the straight. but when challenged by Poet's Pride gave in without much of a struggle
and was beaten by a lengan. Isore was running on at the finish and would probably be better suited by a longer course than this rather sharp mille and a quarter. Poet's' Pride, who is probably rather bet- ter than a selling-plater, was bought in after the race for 410 guineas.
Richards also won the other selling race, the first selling race of the year for two-year-olds" to be run over six furlongs.
