London, May 8. Britain requires, as a war reserve. according to calculations made in the current issue of the "British Medical Journal":
The same amount of wheat as we now use annually.
Over a million more tons of potatoes. Nearly a million more tons of onions or other vegetables.
Twenty-seven thousand tors more of butter or vitaminised mar- garine.
Qver a million tons of cheese or other protein-yielding foodstuffs (meat, bacon, cured fish),
Some thousands of tons of dried

THE IMMEDIATE NEED
"It follows, then," says
the. "British Medical Journal," "that if we were self-supporting in milk and its products, meat, potatoes, onions, other vegetables, cats and barley, the foodstuffs to be provided from outside sources would be wheat, maize and sugar. To these it would be safe to add a supply of grains suitable för sprouting.
***The immediate need is the storage of a sufficient supply of such foodstuffs as will in them- selves provide a well-balanced "emergency ration": the ultimate need, a need which should be sat- isfied as soon as possible, is to be- come self-supporting in those essen- tial foodstuffs as possible,

IN
St. Andrew's, May 30. Hector Thompson, Walker Cup player and former Scottish Cham- pion won the British Open Amateur Golf title when he beat Jim Ferrier, former Shanghal player and „Aus- tralian champion, by two up after a thrilling match.
The players were all square at the 9th and at the 18th Thomson established a lead of two strokes which won him the title.
Thomson missed a short putt at the 18th and Ferrier, with a fine approach shot, made a successful negotiation for a partial stymle and squared the match as a result, The cards for the first 18 holes were as follows: Thomson: 3, 4, 3, 4, 5, 4, 4, 3, 537 ́5, 3, 4. 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 4-37 Ferrier: 4. 5, 5, 4, 5, 3, 4, 3. 4—37 4, 3, 3. 4, 7, 5, 5, 5, 4-46
