JETTY MISTAKEN FOR BRIDGE AT NIGHT
Shanghal, May 13. Three Chinese were known to have drowned and four or ve
persons are believed to be missing as a result of an accident shortly Defore o'clock yesterday morn- ing when a motor car plunged headlong into the canal separating Yangtszepoo azd Point Island. Two bodies were found in the ear
when it was salvaged later in the morning, while the body of a third Chinese was recovered from the river in the vicinity towards noon. The car, a 1827 model, Buick sedan, was carrying a party of fish hong employees from Nantao to the Fish Market which opened for business on Point Island yesterday, Apparently mistaking a Jetty for the Tingha Road Bridge in the mist and rain, the chauffeur ran the vehicle straight of it, examination of the car revealed that he had applled the brakes, but did so too late to avert the accident.

AN EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT
The sole eye-witness was a Chi- nese watchman employed by the Public Works Department of the S.M.C. He said the car was being driven at a fairly fast speed. Pushing to the jetty from his but a few yards away after hearing the noise, of the splash, he found two or three men in the water. They cried for help and quickly disappeared.
As the car plunged into the river,

Interviewed by a representative of the North-China Daily News,” the laodah said that until he was told by the watchman he did not know that a car had gone into the river. He said he heard abouts for help as he came up on deck.
A Sikh policeman on patrol duty was informed of the accident by the watchman and reported it to the station. Combined efforts by the River Police and the Settlement Police at rescue failed to bring about any result. In fact little could be done because of darkness and rain. Engines from Yangtze- poo Fire Station also turned out at about 4:40 am.

SIR ALEXANDER CADOGAN'S RETURN
Several Changes To Be Made
Londoh, April 24, Sir Alexander Cadogan, who was appointed Deputy Under-secretary of State at the Foreign Office in February, is on his way home from China.
He wil not take up his duties until July. He has two months" leave owing to him. I should like to correct the mpression that he is an ardent champion or the League of Nations. In his ap- proach to his work he is without emotions and without prejudices.
He was a great Agure at Eton and at Balliol, but he has always been coldly practical-a man who expects another iceage and bas prepared himself for it. At a time when a return to realities in for eign affairs is essential he should make an admirable assistant to Sir Robert Vansttart
FOREIGN OFFICE MOYES Sir Alexander's appointment wil necessitate several diplomatic
moves..
His successor as Ambassador to China has already been appointed. He is Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hur- essen, at present Minister to Persia.... sia.
The appointment of a successor to Sir Hughe in Teheran wil beave another Legation.free, and possib- ly one or two more. One promo- tion in fact, frequently entails a minar diplomatic general post,
As Bir Hughe, who is now on leave, is returning to Perzia and will not go to China until Septem- ber, the new appointments are not kely to be announced for some time, and in any case will not be taken up until the autumn.
