ANNUAL REPORT

W

A surplus of $405,211.04 for last year is reported by Mr. R. D. Walker, manager, in his ac- count of the working of the British section of the Kowloon- Canton Railway.

According to the report, whlen was presented at the meeting of the Legislative Council yesterday. the net

surplus was arrived a: after making provision for all in- terest charge, and has been ap- lied to the reduction of the ac- cumulated deficit brought forward irom previous years.

The total deficit at the end of the year amounted to $8,288,129.67.

In a general survey of the year the report says that con- siderable anxiety was caused to the railway administration through a combination of el- cumstances beyond its control. Operating revenues were affected considerably by the economic in stability engendered by the high price of silver, by the complete fakure of the fruit crop in Kwang tung and by the existence through out the entire period of a rate war among the Canton river steamers.
