The Vickers-Armstrong Com- pany announced from Barrow re- cently that it had received orders from the Peninsular and Oriental Company to build two liners of twenty-four thousand tons. These and certain other orders, taken to- gether with the news that the ten- ders for a sister ship or ships for the Queen Mary may be seriously considered once, she has finished her

numerous trials, would in- dicate that the outlook for ship- building is distinctly better than it was. The return of ships under construction during the first quar ter of the year, which was publish- ed recently, bears out this belief. Tonnage under construction in Great Britain and Ireland" had risen by 276,000 tons since Decem- ber and Is June, 1931. But the advance must be viewed with a sense of propor- tion.
