Sir Thomas And Lady Southorn
TEN YEARS IN H.K.
Few publie men have gained. auch high esteem in so short a Lerm of office in Hong Kong as Sir Thomas Southorn, former Colonial Secretary and Officer Administer- ing the Government, who, with Lady Southern, will leave to-day...
After exactly 10 years in Hong Kong, Sir Thomas leaves for a holiday in England before taking up his recently appointed post as Governor of The Gambia.
There could have been, no great- er tribute to the popularity of Sir Thomas and Lady Sowthorn than the gift of the Chinese community during the week-a blackwood screen, on the porcelain surface of which was inscribed in Chinese characters Sir Thomas's career and a eulogy of his achievements.
That the Chinese community should have departed from their old age custom and included, for the first time in the history of the Colony, the wife of a departing official" in their formal address, is Lufficient indication of the esteem in which both are held.
ENERGETIC WORKER Lady Southorn in particular, has beer an energetic, worker during her 10 years in Hong Kong, and many organisations here will miss her active interest in their affairs. A leader of many charitable or- ganisations, she was also an en- thusiastic executive of the Girl Guides and the healthy progress of that, body is due in no small mea- sure to her keen interest. Com- missioner for the Girl Guldes, she was also President of the Women's International Club, the Society for Protection of Children, Ladies Hockey Club and Philharmonie So-
