MEN OF SUSSEX PLAY MARBLES

Championship Title Changes Hands

Tinsley Green. Sussex, Apr. 10.

In this corner of Su-sex po-day i saw an English, a British, pos- albly a world's championship change had. It was the marbles championship. The holder beaten and a London bus driver reigns in his steadi

The match tuck place at the Greyhound at Tinsley Green, the scene through three centuries of historic matches in this final test of adult skill at one of the games in which youth has indulged since the dawn of time.

Four teams had gathered for the final. Two roughi clay patches had been prepared, on which they could try their skill.

Touch one's nose with a "tolly" and let it drop, and the "tolly" pearest to the circle gives its owner the right to shoot first. In the centre, as the bout begins, there are four marbles for every man competing, walling to be knocked out and to give points to the suc cessful shooter.

The individual championship carles with it the prize of an in- -scribed tankard. It has been held tab.years by a Tinsley Green man, but this time the holder-Big Bert Botting--was dead out of form.

He could score no more than four

In the final against a nine from F. S. Harding, a London Transport driver from the Crawley depol. The team from Crawley also won the team championship.

There can be no doubt that Harding is a worthy champion of marbles, despite the fact that he assured me that until the last year or id he had not touched a "mig- gie" since his boyhood.

DISAPPOINTED TEAM

Thsley Green were relying on their old and tried experts, such as "Killer" Cook, who has a re- putation second to none for the killing of an opposing marble in a crisis.

I

They also had that famous ex- pert, Fudge" Manville, who is ge- nerally accepted as the most cun- ning marble player "of modern times. "Smug" Barrett made a good score for Tinsley Green, but his forte-as the name implies is his rapidity in "smuggling" any mar- bles left in the circle when the clock strikes noon-for old tradi- flon is emphatic that all serious games 'should then cease."

PRIZES ON VIEW

We are also asked to state that by the courtesy of Messrs. Lane Crawford, Ltd, a display of the prizes in kind which will be com- peted for during the above meet- ing will be on view in their win- dows from noon on Friday until Monday next and a special invita- tior is made to anyone interested. to visit this establishment and thus see the trophies, etc. which, by this time next week will have found their new owner's.

As regards the tickets for the squadded events taking place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday the Honorary Secretary informs us that in view of the entries being ap proximately double the number ex- pected, he has found it impossible to complete the squadding up till how and competitors must there- fore call for their tickets at the ticket tent on the Kowloon Ranges should they not receive them to- morrow or Friday. Every effort will be made to distribute the tickets by Friday evening but no guarantee can be given that such will be the case.

Here's one cigarette that

writes its own advertising..

It's like this-

You see I'm reading a Chest- erfield advertisement and I'm smoking a Chesterfield ciga- rette, and all of you are smok- ing Chesterfields. ‹

Now listen-Chesterfields are mild (not strong, not harsh). That's true isn't it?

4

Then you

read "and yet they satisfy, please your taste, give

you what you want in a cigas rette." That says it, docsn't it?

Wait a minute-

It says now that Chester.. fields have plenty of aroma and davor. One of you go out of the room and come back. That

will tell how pleasing the

you aroma is.
