AN ASTONISHING SURPLUS
to
The financial year 1935-36 closed with a real surplus of £15,407,926- That is the figure which represents the true result of the year, though It is technically reduced £2,941,702 by the application of about £12,000,000 to the repay- ment of debt. The general feeling will be one of astonishment at the extraordinarily favourable charne- ter of the year's results. For the estimates of expenditure have been completely upset. Mr. Chamber- la in opening his Budget last year stated: "We are framing our requirements to-day at a time of fresh anxiety in Europe. We must recognize that our further progress may be powerfully affect- ed by events over which we have little control." This warning has been all too fully justified. It has teen found necessary to present to Parliament supplementary 23- timates totalling £29,750.000 net. AUTONOMY MOVEMENT IN NORTH CHINA
British Chamber's Views On Situation
Shanghai, Apri: 11.
The opinion that the so-called autonomy movement in North China must still be regarded seriously was voiced by Mr. R. Caid- er Marshali, Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, when presiding at the annual meeting.
The initial defeat sustained by this "sinister menace” has only resulted in adoption of tresh tactics with the same objective. namely the severance of Hopei. Chahar, Shantung. Shansi and Sulyuan from China, he said.
Mr. Marshall declared that the vigour with which the' mqye- ment was opposed by educationalists and students successfully disposed of the claim that autonomy was spontaneously desired by the people in North China.
The temporary establishment of the Hopel-Chahar Political Council had seemingly ensured Nanking's control, but subversive activities with separatist airns were apparent- ty being systematically carried on.
