A man of many parts, he is a voluble talker any subject. writer. caricaturist. musician, globe-trotter, addresser of Rotary Clubs, lover of his native Hungary and above all, a student of human nature.

Humour and' religion have "been the main interests of Mr. Schwartz's recent inquiries.
One of his conclusions
is that although there
surprising lack of a sense of humour la India, the Sikhs are, together with the Bainese and American Negro. one of the few races that have combined humour with religion,

having driven a bicycle in a dangerous manner in Connaught. Road Cen-
Thursday and with driving a bl- tral near the Star Ferry Wharf on
cycle past a traffic signal at the Star Ferry Wharf. A fine of $20 was imposed on the second men- tloned offence, hut the Arst charge was dismissed.

secuted.
In the witness box, Chinese con- stable D222 sald that he was on point-duty at about 2.20 p.m. yea- terday when the defendant dis- obeyed the light while riding on his bicycle, and collided with and knocked down a small European chlid. "He immediately ran away. but returned some time Jater, dressed in a different suit of cloth- ing and claimed the bleycle, which witness, had with him. Witness recognised defendant as the man who had disobeyed the signal, by a scar on his face, an arrested him. Defendant dented the offence, saying he had parked his bicycle, outside the B. and S. Buliding from where it had been stolen. He ran after the thief and was accused of passing the traffic light,

PLANS FOR NEW TYPE
OF HOUSE
To Meet The Demand For Lower Rents
CONSTRUCTION
COMPANY
Plans for a type of house new to Hong Kong were being prepared to meet the altered conditions stated Mr. J. P. Braga when he presided at the annual general meeting of shareholders of the Hong Kong Engineering and Construction Company, Limited, yesterday.
Mr. Brega also stated that the building had begun oi three houses on the Company's Kowloon scheme. Addressing the Shareholders, Mr. Braga said:-
Some little satisfaction must be felt that the past year concluded rather better than its predecessor with the small balance of $5,178.57 to the credit of profit and loss ac- count. This, was a more favour- able result than the prospects dur- ing the earlier period of the past year had led us to expect, and it was achieved through the exercise of economy which was contributed to by the ordinary directors them- selves in the voluntary contribu- tion of 50 per cent of their full fees to which they were entitled, and which was waived as a prae- tical gesture of their sympathy with shareholders when adverse conditions confronted them.
While the directors offered to forego their fées by half, which re duction as you might have seen. is reflected in the accounts. It must not be assumed that they have abandoned the principle that they have properly earned their remun-; eration.
In fact, the duties and the work devolving upon the directors, not to mention their responsibilities. during the period under review have één no less arduous than when normal conditions prevalled
Watchful carefulness and unre- mitting attention to detalls have been called for in the exercise of functions
at imposed
time fraught with difficulties and éx- actions no less onerous than in prosperous times.
UNEXPECTED WINDFALL Shareholders will have noted the reappearance in our balance sheet of a general reserve fund. In ex- planation of this, I have pleasure in informing you that during 1935 through fortuitous circumstances an amount of $15,175,12 was.. re- covered in respect of a debt which had been previously written off as bad,
Following their usual conserva- tive policy, your directors (bought It prudent to reinstate the general Leserve fund at this figure, rather than credit the amount to profit and loss account.
An item which, I believe, will not have escaped your attention is that made" up

Progress with all the four house cannot but be regarded with satis- faction as regards time, materials, and excellence of workmanship. These houses with others to follow can be regarded as not the least valuable of the Company's assets.
Pursuing this subject further. I may add that the Company does nut relax its activity. It is at pre- sent engaged in the preparation of plans for another type of houses to meet the altered conditions and circumstances locally due to a curtailment of residents' ability to meet the same level of rents S when the Colony was enjoying more prosperous times.
The new design will, in our opin- lon, be attractive in appearance, with ample and suitable accom- modation, and well appointed for the class of tenants whose needs the new houses are planned to meet adequately and economically. - ARGYLE STREET WIDENING
One of our undertakings in com- pliance with the special conditions stipulated by the Government in respect of its sale of your extensive property under development, is the obligation on our part to widen and form that portion of Argyle Street that abuts on 'the southern portion of the property for its en- tire length.
可
This is, of course, an important
improvement public
emanating directly from the Company's aċ- tivities in Kowloon and one which is being carried out entirely at the Company's own cost with great resultant benefit to the Colony and particularly to residents in Kow- loon, both as to the user of the street in question and as to the re- lief from the capital cost to Gov- ernment entailed in effecting such improvement.
HARMONIOUS CO-OPERATION Your Directors are pleased to be In the position to state that two large important utility concerns, the China Light and Power Co., Ltd, and the Hong Kong Tele- phone
Co., Ltd., are working in harmonious co-operation with the Company for the laying down bi their mains for the provision of electricity for power and lighting on the one hand and telephonic communication on the other.
As full a review of the Report and Statements of Accounts has been made as their features ap- peared to your directors to call for, but should shareholders desire any further information, I shall be glad to answer any relevant questions after my motion has been seconded by a shareholder.
At the present stage of the deve- |lopment of this attractive residen- tial scheme, it is very obvious that of this sum ai inconsiderable this harmonious co-operative ac-. amount has been collected since tion on the part of the three Com- the closing of the Company's panies. viz., the two public uillity books. APPEAL TO SHAREHOLDERS Unless all shareholders alike "play the game" and pay the calls. As money is required to carry on the scheme, it may be 'disadvan- tageousy retarded. Your "directors trust that shareholders may not have to be reminded again as to their obligations in the matter of the prompt payment of Calls.
These are, I think. the only im- portant items in the accounts to which reference need be made in a review of the past financial year's operations.
You will very likely welcome some information regarding the land and :-buliding- scheme to which I have
·referred but a moment ago,
