SENSATIONAL UPSET IN THE HONG KONG DERBY
Favourites' Poor Day
Close Finishes And Good Dividends
Sensation after sensation featured the second day of the An- nual Race Meeting of, the Hong Kong Jockey Club yesterday when favourites were beaten time and again in the earlier races, which culminated in the sensational defeat of the Werby favourite- Royal Scot by Honeymoon Eve and King's Lead in one of the most thrilling and exelting Derby Races seen for many an Annual Race Meeting.
The weather held out throughout the day and the many ladies vied with each other in their new Spring frocks which once again added colour to the whole scene,
In contrast to the first day's racing, favourites did not have all the say, in fact upsety were so numerous that one was prone to ask if the favourites were all having an off day; but thanks to Yo Ho, King's Sceptre. Macaroni and the rest which came of with flying colours in the afternoon the favourites redeemed their lost prestige.
Great interest was centred on the Special Dollar Sweep ran in connection with the Hong Kong Derby. The first prize which was won by ticket No. 93826 on Honeymoon Eve realised 569,- 964,30, while ticket No. 120145 on King's Lead was worth $19,989,- 30 and ticket No. 59391 on, Royal Scot obtained $9,994.90. Un- placed ponies were each rewarded with $1,135.80.
The first leg of the Daily Double was successfully backed by 495 people while only 114 were correct in the second leg which returned $42.20 each. In this event Royal Scot sadly disappoiņi- ed its 280 backers.
Riding honours were very evenly divided yesterday, the mat successful jockey was Mr. C. Encarnacao who obtained three firsts and a third closely followed by Mr. F. Marshall with twoTM fiesta, two seconds and a third. Mr. Leo Frost with two firsts, one second and one third and Mr. S. Y. Liang with two firsts.
Ills Excellency The Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott, accom- panied by Capt. W. J. R. Cragg. A.D.C., arrived at the Race Course shortly before noon and WAS an interested spectator throughout the day.
