JAVA'S SUGAR

CROPS

BERLIN SHARE MARKET

Extension Of Planted [Special to the "Hong Kong Daily

Area

Amsterdam-Java's sugar crops are to be trebled in 1936, according

to information here.

İL

Crops have lately amounted to 50,000 tons per year. In 1936 it is planned to raise 1,500,000 tons. This is still only 50 per cent of the production Java raised in the years of greatest prosperity.

The contemplated extension of the sugar planted area will provide

work for many bands. The num-

ber of Europeans employed in the Java sugar industry will be in crcased from 1000 at present to 2200 in 1936 and early 1937, when the actual refining of the extend- ed crops, planted in 1936, will set the sugar mills spinning again,

Gradually in the course of 1936. the number of mills in operation is to be increased. More feld assis-' tants will be required and a'large number of native workers. The regular milling of the increased crop will start early in 1937.

As the required 1200 European field axɛlatants, and sugar mill en- gineers cannot be recruited from the unemployed in Java, a certain number will have to be sent out agali from the Netherlands. This opens up new opportunities for the graduates of the sugar engineering schools which, since 1931, have rigidly reduced their classes on ac-

count of the lack of opportunity

plantations.

-RUBBER SHIPMENTS TO AMERICA

London, Feb. 13. Mincing Lane is elated at the shipments of rubber to New York.

It is reported that at last two thousand tons have been engaged for shipment' very"""shartly," while some quarters place the tota: ¡ nearer al thousand tons, and suggest that a special ship will be chartered for the purpose.

No substantiation of this renori is as yet forthcoming, but it is known that New York purchased 1500 tons last night.

The extent of thể drain of rub- ber from warehouser "both in London and Liverpool can be estimated by the fact that the niarket is freely talking of A TE- duction of weekly stocks' by : be- tween three and four thousand tons Heutor
