NEW COIFFURE

FOR HEPBURN

The "Hepburn Bob," an intri- guing and youthful new hairdress, is being introduced by Katharine Hepburn in her newest starring production, RKO Radio's "gyivin Scarlett." Mel. Berns, head of the the make-up department at studio, designed the colature.

"The styling of this hairdress was dependent to a large extent. upon Miss Hepburn's role in the film," Berns explained. "In the early sequences of the picture she masquerades as a boy. For this part, with her customary insistence upon realism, she cut her hair as short as any man's. Then she throws off the disguise, and 3D pears as herself. This left us with the nice little problem of developing a feminine colffare from's mannish beb...

REPEATEDLY TRIMMED "Throughout the shooting of the masquerade sequences, her hair had been trimmed repeatedly on the sides and in back. To top-it. was longer. As a boy, she brush- ed this "hair straight back. To create the feminine coiffure, tha hair was burshed down into Miss Hepburn's forehead and its natural tendency to curl encouraged. The ends of her hair all over the head were curled into little ring- lets and allowed to blow free," Eerns concluded

The resultant effect is one of casual, carefree youth, the engag- ing piquancy so characteristically Hepburn. And because the 'coiffure is so charming in its in- terpretation of happy-go-lucky femininity, Berns predicta for the new "Hepburn Bob" the game wide-spread popularity enjoyed by the "Hepburn Bang, the quaint hair style made famous by the star's role in "Little Women."
