HIGH LEVEL OF
ACTIVITY
A high level of activity prevail-. ed in the British Iron and Sicel. industry during the month of October
Pig Iron production amounted to $44.300 tons agaris: 520,800 ton in September, and 527,100 tons in October, 1934. There were 99 fur- aces in blast at the end of the month compared with 97 at the end of september. Steel produc- tion at 907,300 tons compared with 855,900 tons in Sertember and 812,000 tons in October, 1934, set up a record for any month since March, 1927. 5.
There has also been a consider- able improvement in foreign trade in iron and steel; importa. When In October amounted to 101,8UU tons against 89,300 tons in Sep- tember, and 120,000 tons in Octo- ber, 1934, reflected the recent, ine crease of domestic consumptiou: Exports advanced more rapidly to 224.000 tons from 187,200 tone in September, and 220.900 ons in.. October, 1934. .""
On the iron and steel markets, the position was such that nearly all branches of the industry are certain to be busy for months to come: owing to the strength of the demand it was recently dead- ed to increase the imports of semi-finished steel from Cartel Countries by 10,000 tons per month for two months with a don- sible extension to six months --
