TREASON TRIALS BY PEERS”
Four words, proposed as an amendment to Lord Sankey's mo- tion for the abolition of trials of peers by their peers, are likely to lead to an interesting debate when the House of Lords reassembles on Feb.. 4. The brief amendment will raise a constitutional "polno 240 years old.
Lord Rankeillour will move to in- sert in the motion for the abolition
of such trials the words, "in cases of felony."
If this were carried, charges of treason against peers would still be tried by the Lords.
ONE IN 240 YEARS Although Lord Rankeillour withes to differentiate between treason and felony, the House may well decide that, in both cases trial by peers has "outlived its use- fulness."
Lord Lovat, who was tried by the House of Lords and sentenced to death in 1747 for his part in the *45, la the only peer to be arraigned for treason since the passing of the Act of 1895.
