Shanghal, Jan. 7. The appointment is announced of Mr. P. D. G. Gain, director of Messrs. Blows and Co., Ltd.. rs the new trade commissioner China for #the Union of South

Africa.

Mr. Gain is fully qualified to take up this position. as. In addition to being born and bred in South Africa, he has also had extensive experience of trade conditions in China, and has travelled all over the Far East entirely in the in- terests of British manufacturers. He came to China in 1913, and up to the end of 1934 he conducted his own business, but early in 1935 his interests were amalgamated with those of Messra, Slowe and Co.

During his days in South Africa, Mr. Gain was $1 keen rugger player.
