French Singer
famous
To Bernard Newman, American designer, fell the in- teresting task of creating the gowns worn by Lily Pons in "I Dream Too Much," the RKO Ra- dio Picture in which this famous French singer makes her screen debut. The result is particularly brilliant, combining as it does the striking designs of one of Ame- » rica's most talented stylists and the chic and charm of a true And being a Frenchwoman. Frenchwoman, Miss Pons has her own Ideas about what is smart.
Smart clothes to Miss Fons mean costumes which adhere to the simpler, classic lines. Ques- tioned as to the relative merits of the American and French dealg- ners Miss Pons declared that sty- les here and in Parts are individ- ual, totally different. Alling di ferent needs.
"Parisian dressmakers are supreme when designing evening clothes while their American con- freres seem to and their forte in informal and sports costumes.
IS PARIS LOSING INFLUENCE! "Hollywood designers have risen in importance as style leaders. Ever since American stylists be- came influential through the use of their fashions in motion pic- tures, many people say Paris is losing its importance as style arbiter. I don't feel this true. There is so much" room for both. so much need for smart and in- teresting, clothes, that I feel neither will ever completely do minate the styles selected by the well-dressed woman,
**They may
borrow from each other," Mias Рола continued "French designers admit that they have followed, on occasion, ideas presented by American designers and the motion pictures. but- well, Paris has been Paris for many generations, and I feel that smart women the world over will always find that her designs mean clothes of distinction. I also be-- Heve that for many generations to come designers everywhere will continue to watch with interest Pariman styles."

in her debut picture is an even-stle, and there is still an oppor- ing gown, two suits and several daytime ensembles. Tea rose lame, woven with silver threads was used to fashion the evening Kown, which features a flared train and daring slash at the hemline in centre front. A cir- cular cloak of the dress fabric, lavish with magnificent silver and baguette diamond and emerald cilps fastening it to the gown complete this gorgeous ensemble.
Both sults in Miss Pons' screen wardrobe are quite tailored. One is of cloud grey wool with a man- nish coat gured to at. Two blou- ses were made for this sult, one of green and white plaid taffeta, with a round, ruffled collar ap- pearing only in front and fasten- ing with a star-shaped bow, the other made of white dotted Swise, buttoning with tiny pearl buttons, and rimmed with narrow Valen- ciennes lace.
The second suit la a hand woyen Scotch wool in warm yellow, the detailed tailoring enhancing its charm. Brown velvet was used
to trim the box-pleated Jacket pockets and tailored revers Worn with the suit is a yellow silk scarf with brown polka dots, a brown pul box hat and brown accessor-

A amir little street frock of dark brown crepe with a novel use of ecru grosgrain ribbon to form the collar and cuffs and a simple frock of red, printed with black and white daisies, complete the wardrobe.

Care And Personality
Katharine Hepburn, long ar-" groomed to be effective. knowledged one of Hollywood's

most glamorous stars, has leain- ed one secret of beauty too many women gnore, She has learned the secret of beautiful hande
Many women (and almost all men) labour under the delusion that hand beauty depends tirely upon the size and shape and or less incidentally--on the care of the hands. Actually the size, and shape matters not at all, the care is of utmost impor- tance, and a third item, invar- fably ignored, tops the list. Thia Item is training. Hands. to be beautiful, must be educated,
More
No woman can be lovely with nervous fidgety hands. It's an old rule of the stage that an audi- ence is attracted instantly.. by movement. A restless chorus girl or extra player can draw all eyes trom the star merely by fidgeting in the background. The fidgeter is invariably dismissed.
IF THE FIDGET........
The rule works with an individ- wal. Your face is the star, your hands the chorus. If they fidget and distract attention when your face or voice is playing a moto -part, dismiss them. All it takes is a little watchful care, a definite study in composure which your face learned before you left child- hoou.
It's a poor rule that doesn't work both ways. You might re-". mark that there are times when chorus and extras on the stage move, sing, talk, become the cen- tre of attraction. But then; so ao your hands. However, like the chorus, the hands must be schoot- ed to carry out the definite idea behind your entire production." They must be a part of the plot. Nothing is lovelier than useful hands” moving deftly to perforin a definite task, whether it is washing dishes or arranging fo- wers. Nothing is more annoying than bands fluttering aimlessly and accomplishing nothing. A gesture used to bring out a con- versational point is emective. A little finger curled affectedly
· round a teactip is just affly,
MUST BE WELL-GROG
One thing more. Hands, like chorus on the stage, must be well-
'Miss' Hepburn belleves this so strongly she cares for her hands herself the greater part of the time, con-" stantly on guard to keep them in perfect condition,
These are the two lessons-care sna training which all great, stars learn about their hands. Possibly Katharine Hepburn knew the rules instinctively. Certaia- ly she understands to the last degree the value of hands in creating a new character on the
