THE LOSS OF THE PARINGA

The loss of the Paringa once again brings forth the question as to why Hong Kong cannot bring Itself into step with Singapore. There is no denying the fact that conditions, insofar as they apply River shipping, are so deplorable

that stern measures must be taken immediately to prevent owners of vessels from exploiting the officers and engineers who are driven by stress of circumstances to accept the first job they can get.

We need no evidence to substan- tiate our statement that masters, officers and engineers serving in certain section of the vessels plying between Hong Kong and West River parts are deplorably under- paid, and very often have to work under conditions which no self- respecting Briton would tolerate. But what could be done? It is a Hobson Choice. Take it under ang

Vienna, Jan. 8. Nineteen out of the 21 members of the former Socialist Party management who are awaiting trial for alleged incitement to high treason in connection with the in- surrection of February 19, 1934 were granted amnesties by the State President according to an official notice issued on Tuesday night. The punitive process which had been going on has been dropped.

The Socialist Party ex-chairman. the former Mayor of Vienna, Karl Seltz, was not among those who received the amnesty nor the ex- deputy, Rosa Jochmann, who re- mained in hiding for six months after February, 13, 1934 and during this time continued dirrecting secret propaganda against the Government.".
