"PEOPLE WILL TALK" "

"People Will Talk," which opens to-day at the Queen's Theatre, brings Charlie Ruggles and Mary Boland back to the screen in one of the pleasantest and funniest pictures they've ever made--a picture that runs the whole gamut of laughter from out-and- out burlesque to subtle and amus- ing farce. Set in a suburban com- munity, "People Will Talk." tells of Ruggles' and Miss Boland's attempt to straighten out the marital affairs of their daughter and son-in-law by staging a mock battle royal themselves, with the idea of showing the younger couple how silly it all is, But Miss Boland forgets it's all in fun and begins resenting her husband's enthusiasm for his new role and trouble begins.

""THE COUNTESS OF MONTE CRISTO” ""The Countess of Monte Cristo" a delicious comedy-drama released through Universal Picture began Its initial run at the Star Theatre yesterday.

In the leading feminine role is Fay Wray who gained new heights of popularity by her outstanding performance in this picture, and playing opposite her Is..none other than Paul Lukas, although the love interest is suppiled by Paul Page.

FRED ASTAIRE AND GINGER ROGERS

Films Leading Dance Stars, Work Harder To-day Than When They Began

til they are perfect.

WORKS 160 HOURS

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, pa countless number of times un- perching on the very top of the film world to-day sa the mest popular singing and dancing stars the screen has ever known, have worked harder in making "Top Hat," their new RKO Radio musical film showing shortly at one of the local Theatres with its Irving Berlin scare, than they did when they first took up together as twirling partners.

By the same token, they will. Kit is humanly possible, work harder in making their next "Follow The Fleet," also with tunes by Berin, the hit-master For uneasy rest the heads that wear the movie crowns, and Fred

and Ginger are always "in" "the" position of having to top them- selves in each succeeding pic- ture. And of course they do, as visitors to "Top Hat" will learn when they see the beautiful "Cheek to Cheek" and the thril ling "Piccolino.”

TWO-JOBS When "Fred and Glager "start work on a picture on the RKO lot in Hollywood, Astaire has two jobs, and it is hard to sav which is the more important. Six weeks befère "Top Hat" went be- fore the cameras, he took Hermes Pan, studio dance director, and Hal Borne, planist, to a quiet and deserted stage and, there began creating the dances for the pic- sure, Fred designe his amazing routines himself, fast planning the general outline of each dance, then working on the steps. and

finally putting the whole thing together as a perfect ter- paichorean mosäte.

When the number is finally planned and endlessly rehearsed by its creator, Miss Rogers Joins the party. Fred teaches her the steps, and then they go over it

For instance, Astaire estimates, that he spent at least 180 hours. creating and rehearsing "The Piccolino," which is to "Top Hat” what "The Continental was to "The Gay Divorcee," only more so That is to say, it is the outstand- ing dance creation" of the film staged spectacularly on a huge and

beautiful set representing part of the Lido Venice" and pers formed by the stars and, by the same fine dancing ensemble which smashed over "The Con- tinental" nearly a year ago.

"The Piccolino," „incidentally', is, a fast, fox trot "which is easily adaptable to ballroom use, and dance fans everywhere will soon be doing the tricky Ettle "Pic co.ino Step” which Astaire in- vented and which gives distinc tion to the dance.

A STERN CRITIC

Astaire fans will be interested to know that he is the hardest man on the set to please-harder, perhaps, than Director Mark Sandrich ot "Top Hat" himself, Others usually think thë Astaire- Rogers numbers are perfect long before the star himself is satisfied. Hè la just as critical of the`drama- tic and comedy scenes, and during the making of "Top Hat" he oc casionally asked Sandrich to re- shoot a scene after the director was perfectly satisfied "with the "take."

This Infinite capacity, for tak ing pa'ns which is part and par cel of Fred and Ginger is, after. all, undoubtedly one of the most important reasons why they are unquestionably tops in their feld-the most charming and, ex- citing dancers of the day.

Stirred by the current vogue for outdoor action film dramas of the finest type, RKO Radio Pictures came to the startling de-. cision that one he-man west- ern hero is good for a motion picture, eleven are approximately eleven times as effective.

Therefore, when the company decided to produce Powdersmok Range," an exciting melodrama of cattle-rustling and cow-town villainy, it set about gathering the greatest all-star group of screen riders who ever charged the camera with six-guns blazing.
