“NIGHT STAR” CAUSES

CAUSES SURPRISE IN SATURDAY'S RACING

Daily Double Pool Not Won

MANY UPSETS

No punters were successful in backing the second leg of the Daily Double at the Eleventh Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club held on Saturday with the result that the pool of $3,656,40 was carried forward to the next Extra Race Meeting.

The Meeting was favoured with ideal sunny weather and attendance compared to previous meeting was good. The many ladies present with their pretty frocks added much to the Meet.

There were several upsets in the course of the afternoon's sports, the chief of which was Night Stor's win in the Nullah Handicap in the first leg of the Daily Double. Mr. Ralph ably rode the winner to return the highest dividend of the day to 36 backers with $211.60 each.

On the whole dividends were higher than it used to be for the last two meetings. Cash Sweep figures too went up.

Messrs. N. Deitz and were the most successful jockeys of the day, returning two firsts and a second closely followed by the Championn Jocky. Mr. Leo Frost, who secur ed two firsts and two thirds,

His Ecellency, the Officer Administering the Government, Sir Thomas Southern was an interested spectator.

In the last race of the day Gold Coin was badly kicked by Wadebridge on the thigh.

SURREY HANDICAP Bright, sunny weather favoured the Surrey Handicap when five starters went to the mile past. At- tendance was good compared to the last two meetings.

Hetman led right from the be ginning. Soldier of Germany and King's Bounty alternately changed places for second and third places respectively. Hetman kept up the sante good pace and after the 220 yards post was arrived at, King's Bounty dropped back and allowed Soldier of Germany to take second place. Ribble ably ridden by Mr. Davis came in. third, SUFFOLK HANDICAP-"D" CLASS¦ The attendance had swelled by the time the 14 ponies went out for the six furlongs in the "D" Class bf Suffolk Handicap. Double Chance was in front followed in the rear by Tin Ho and Young

start. Cavalcade led until the Foot ball Stand when she was displaced by Flybynight. At the half mile post Great Hall took the lead. On the stretch Racing Boy came up strong-

and when the Black Rock was reached Tillicum was in the lead with Solar Star and Partnership following behind. On the stretch Wembley Stag raced strongly to come in first with Tillicum secondly challenged by Great Hall and and Phin View third.

SUSSEX HANDICAP

The second leg of the Dally Double a half mile event had 10 starters. It was indeed a sprint- ing event right from the word "go." Up the hill past Black Rock with Blacksmith leading followed by Locksley Hall. -Blacksmith led un-

At the stretch Double Chance, Fhilanderer. Young Chap. Glad Eyes and Belmont Star who had shut up by now were fighting neck toneck. It was a glorious finish with each horse straining 115 utnost, Mr. Deitz and Mr. Black Came out to the front about 50 yards from the winning post and dead heated for first place after an exciting Anish. Glad Eyes was third being a short head behind.

HONG KONG GRIFFINS CUP Harvest View led most of the way until she was overtaken by High Honour at the last quarter, who up to now held second place with Pontiac Boy in the third position.

These positions were maintained until. High Honour came up at the last quarter. On the stretch Pop- tiac Bay, came up 'strongly and passed the leaders. Harvest View maintained its second position and Rose Queen which had come up from the rear (and she was the favourite displaced High Honour for third place.

KENT HANDICAP (1ST SECTION) "C" CLASS

Victoria Hall was in the lead and after the first once round · High Speed took the position followed by Pacific Hall. At the Football Stand Victoria Hall came out to the front with High Speed and Bistre in the rear. Bistre coming up to the second position at Black Rock. At the last quarter Soldier of China ably ridden by Mr. Deitz came out to the front and Jungle Jim and Bistre were fighting neck to neck. Boldier winning from Bistre by a neck, the same distance separating the second and third.

NULLAH HANDICAP—"A", CLASS Elght starters entered for the first leg of the Dally Double. Shoot- ing Star led right up to the last furlong with Night Star and Aus- tralian Boy in the rear, These positions were maintained right up to the stretch when Night Star and Australian Boy challenged Shooting Star. It was a very close finish with Night Star just nosing Aus- talian Boy for first place by a length and a short head separated Australian Boy from Shooting Star. GOALS SHARED

Four goals were shared between the Recreio Ladies and the C.BA, played on Saturday afternoon at Ladles in a very even Hockey game the Police Training ground.

Several noticeable improvements were noticed among the two teams particularly in the matter of stick work and positionings. Mrs. Y. Pinna played a very reliable and polished game to net both goals while Miss O. Peters and Miss G. Lakeman replied for the C.B.A.

ST. ANDREW'S WIN

St. Andrew's Ladies Hockey team was in a scoring mood on Satur- day when they trounced the Hong Kong Ladies second string to the tune of seven goals to two. The game was played on the Sookun- poo ground.

The Hong Kong Ladies were playing minus x goalkeeper, but kept the invaders out in the first half with one exception, when Miss P. Gittins scored.

In the second half, the Saints ran riot ang "scored another six goals through Miss P, Gittins (3), Miss I. Gitting (2) and Miss F. Wong, while Mrs. Waddell and Miss" H. Hance replied for the
