But unfortunately

In this case it is extremely neces. sary, that I should do so, because somewhere or other in the Medical Department there appears to have been a very serious dereliction of duties, and the result is that we and ourselves here called on, as citizens of this Colóny, in our res-, pective capacities, to bring in one of the most worried judgments without the assistance of any medical evidence."

Sir Atholl then reviewed the evidence given in all its details ana reminded the jury that in re- turning a verdict in either way they must be unanimous. If there was any doubt at all that beneft of the doubt must be given to the defendants. *****

The Jury then retired for about 35 minutes and found the second accused Ho Wah guilty and the rest not guilty.

As the prisoner was being led away he held on to the dock rails and pathetically pleaded that he was innocent of the charge and had been falsely accused. He challenged the widow to take an oath with him.
